ESTATE PLANNING - An estate plan lays out what you want to happen if you die or become incapacitated. Even if you have a plan in place, you should check in regularly to make sure it is in order. Here’s what to review.
Confirm that you have all the essential documents. A complete estate plan includes four documents. A Living Will provides instructions for health care providers in case you become permanently unconscious or terminally ill. For example, it may outline your wishes for end-of-life care. A Healthcare Power of Attorney names someone to make medical decisions on your behalf when you cannot. A Financial or General Power of Attorney names someone to manage your money and financial accounts. Finally, a Last Will and Testament lists where your property should go upon your death and who should care for your children.
