The DeKalb County primary results are in, and we have some major updates for animals in our communities! 🗳️🐾 Here is where our key races stand:

✅ District 2 & Super District 7: Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard in these crucial districts! In the midterm Elections this fall, we will see Michelle Long Spears (I) and Ben Pepper on the ballot for District 2 and LaDena Bolton (I) running unopposed on the ballot for Super District 7. Your votes keep animal welfare at the forefront of county policy!

🔥 District 3 is Heading to a Runoff! The vote here was incredibly close between Nicole Massiah (I): 42.08% and Keyanna Jones Moore: 41.28%

➡️ What’s next? We are reaching out to the District 3 candidates with updated, specific questions as well as setting up virtual and in-person opportunities for you to hear from them directly. Mark your calendars! The runoff election is June 16th, with early voting dates to be determined. Let’s finish strong! 🐶🐱

It’s Election Day, DeKalb! 🐾 Today isn’t just about politics. It’s about the animals currently waiting in legal limbo at the shelter, the families needing pet resources, and the health and safety of our neighborhoods. Your vote determines who manages our county budget and who prioritizes the humane treatment of animals in our community.

Tomorrow is Election Day! Will we see you at the polls? 🐾🗳️

Our pets can’t tell the County Commission that the shelter is too full. They can’t ask for better public safety or more accessible vet care. They rely on us to do that for them.

Please take 15 minutes tomorrow, May 19, to head to your polling place. It is the single most effective way to advocate for a more humane DeKalb. Easily find your polling location here ➡️ tinyurl.com/DC-GA-polls!

We believe transparency is the best tool for advocacy.

We sent a policy survey to every candidate running for DeKalb County Commission to find out exactly where they stand on animal welfare. Responses were encouraging, but showed us how much work we still have to do.

Before you head to the polls, please take a moment to see where your candidates stand on the animal crisis in DeKalb County.

Tomorrow, May 8, is the LAST day to request an absentee ballot in DeKalb County!

If you aren’t able to vote early or make it to the polls in person on Election Day, please make sure your voice is still heard. It takes two minutes to request, but the impact for our shelter animals lasts much longer.

May is a big month for the animals of DeKalb County. 🐾

While we’re still celebrating the $1.18M in funding you helped us secure for expanding spay/neuter services, the work doesn’t stop there. This month, we have a chance to elect leaders who will decide how our animal services are managed for years to come.

From now until May 19th, we’ll be sharing everything you need to know to be a voice for those who don’t have one at the ballot box.

Let’s keep this momentum going! ✅

Why vote for animals? Because it WORKS! 🐾✨

Your voice at the ballot box translates directly into better lives for DeKalb’s pets. From securing shelter funding to improving local animal laws, the County Commission holds the keys to the progress we’ve seen so far.

THE WINS:
- Increased funding for affordable and accessible spay/neuter programs to reduce the number of animals entering our shelter annually.
- The addition of the 120-kennel New Pet Village adjacent to the shelter to eliminate small pop-up crates and alleviate overcrowding.
- The passing of legislation limiting the number of litters produced by breeders and requiring pet owners to register the litters.
- The passing of an ordinance that restricts the transient sale of pets on public rights of way, such as retail parking lots or parks.

THE GOAL: We need leaders who will continue to prioritize shelter overcrowding and animal safety.
Your vote is their voice. See you at the polls when early voting starts April 27! 🗳️🐕
