Navigating the Ohio Vehicle Sales Process: Essential Tips and Information for Sellers
As an Ohio Notary, I'd like to pass along a few tips and important information for when you're thinking of selling or buying a vehicle in Ohio, whether it be a car, motorcycle, boat, or RV.

Here's what's important to know: The seller must be present to sign the title in front of the notary. For buyers, please do not accept a title from a seller that has been signed without being notarized. The notary must put the seller under oath and notarize the title. If you accept an un-notarized title, you're just going to have to go through the trouble of tracking down the owner and having a notary present for the oath and stamp.

The notary should offer to give an oath or affirmation to the seller to confirm the information on the title is accurate.

For the seller, please make sure there are no blank spaces on the title. A notary cannot legally notarize an open title. The buyer doesn't have to be present BUT the buyer's name and address will need to be on the title for it to be notarized.

If you make a mistake, such as putting your information on the wrong line or signing the title ahead of time, please DO NOT CROSS ANYTHING OUT. It will void the title, and you'll have to get a new one. I always prefer for the client to wait for me before filling information out so I can help.

As an Ohio Notary, I cannot and will not notarize a title without the seller present. Please don't ask.
