Through trust based planning, we are able to help families qualify loved ones for government benefits even if they have assets which would prevent them from eligibility. Typically we are able to save everything for a married couple and about on half of the assets of an individual. The firm is able to assist families who are interested in planning for their minor or adult children with special needs. We specialize in the ability to help families preserve assets for children with special needs without affecting their government benefits. Good news! The Veteran’s improved pension program now covers more veterans and surviving spouses! The VA extended the “war time” period to qualify for Aid & Attendance by more than 5 years! If you or a loved one served in the Republic of Vietnam from November 1, 1955 to May 7, 1975, you may qualify for additional income to help cover unreimbursed medical expenses.

HM Law was represented this morning by our Elder Law Team, Certified Elder Law Attorney, Rachael Houck and our Certified Paralegal, Annie Sambiagio at the listening session this morning for the Nursing Home Task Force Governor DeWine has put in place. The mission is great and hurdles high, but it’s a start to bettering the growing population of our seniors in Ohio. The stories shared were heartbreaking and all too common. I’m hoping through this task force, real change can happen for Ohio, long term care and the quality of care and life for our ever growing senior population.

Our seniors are getting a RAISE!!! The Social Security Administration announced it will be providing an 8.7% cost of living adjustment (COLA) in benefits this year. This means that approximately 70 million Americans receiving Social Security and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see an increase, on average, of more than $140/month starting in January. This COLA is tied to the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There was more good news as it was announced that Medicare premiums for Part B are going down in 2023 from $170.10 to $164.90. This will also put more money into the pockets of our seniors who are attempting to survive on this fixed income.
Beneficiaries should keep an eye out for notification in the mail from Social Security starting in early December regarding their new benefit amount. Of course, a beneficiary may also log onto www.ssa.gov/myaccount to access their account and find out immediately their new benefit amount.

Rachael is on the advocacy committee of CAANE (Collaborative Against Abuse, Neglect & Exploitation) here in Montgomery County and excited to share information concerning the June 15 annual conference. It is a free conference from 9-2 at the Sinclair Community College Great Hall in building 12. Speakers include the Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney, Montgomery County Sheriff, Director of APS Training Center amongst others.
