When your child is seriously injured at daycare, you may be handed an incident report while you’re still trying to process what happened.

Don’t feel like you have to rush through it or sign anything.

Read the report carefully and look for details like when the injury happened, where your child was, who was supervising, what the staff says occurred, and what they did afterward.

Then compare the report with what you were told verbally.

If the daycare’s written explanation is different from the first story you heard, or if important details are missing, document that.

Keep a copy of the report, save your messages with the daycare, and write down anything you remember while it’s still fresh.

When a daycare’s explanation begins to change, parents often find themselves trying to remember who said what, when they said it, and how the story shifted over time.

That is why creating a simple timeline can be so helpful.

Start with the first call or message and write down who contacted you, their role, the date and time, and what they told you.

Then continue documenting every follow-up conversation, written report, app message, email, or text.

If details are added, removed, or contradicted later, make note of that too.

Medication safety is an important part of childcare.

Before leaving any medication with your child’s daycare, ask how the facility handles written permission, staff responsibility, dosage instructions, storage, recordkeeping, and parent notification.

Daycares should inform parents who is authorized to administer the medication and how each dose will be documented.

They should also understand when the daycare will contact them about a missed dose, side effect, mistake, or other concern.

After requesting the daycare’s written incident report, parents should make an independent report to the state.

In Texas, daycare abuse can be reported to Texas Health and Human Services on the website or by calling the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400.

A state report creates a separate record and leads to an investigation into what happened inside the daycare.

That investigation can help uncover safety violations, supervision failures, or patterns that may place other children at risk.

If you believe your child was physically or sexually abused, you should also contact law enforcement.
