Founder Michelle Simpson Tuegel had the privilege of sharing her journey from law school through founding The Simpson Tuegel Law Firm with Law.com.

Founding, and sustaining a law firm is an ongoing process of building, refining and improving systems to support both your clients and your team. In this feature Michelle discusses the mentors who inspired and shaped her and the importance of using technology in law while keeping the human element at the core of legal work.

"Start with your 'why.' One of the reasons I wanted to start my own firm was to remove potential limitations—on the cases I take, the issues I engage with, and how I communicate about them. Founding partner Michelle Simpson Tuegel’s op-ed for Law.com about an often-overlooked reality for plaintiffs’ attorneys: secondary trauma and the emotional toll of representing survivors in s*xual assault, wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases.

Advocating for clients means bearing witness to deeply painful experiences, and over time, that weight can accumulate as we carry their stories with us. The work of a trial lawyer requires us to access deep levels of empathy and authenticity to connect as real people with our clients, juries, and judges. And to access sincere empathy, we have to do the work of taking care of ourselves in a way that avoids numbness to the trauma we are exposed to through our cases.

Thank you Law.com for elevating the importance of trauma-informed lawyering.

Not all trauma is easily overcome, but in confronting and speaking about secondary trauma with honesty, we can be an example to our clients. We can promote resilience, while showing clients and other humans that their stories matter.

Yesterday (September 1st) marked a big victory for survivors in Texas: Trey’s Law has officially taken effect in Texas! This means that victims of s*xual abuse and s*xual assault who signed NDAs in Texas’ civil courts are now free to share their stories. Last week Michelle Simpson Tuegel shared with the Dallas Morning News how this new law is already changing lives of the clients we represent. Grateful for the work of Elizabeth Phillips and the many survivors who stood with her to get this legislation through.

We appreciate The New York Times covering the developing situation at Indiana University. As I told them, IU is attempting to diminish former team physician Brad Bomba’s predatory conduct by claiming he lacked s*xual intent. Our clients and team couldn’t disagree more, and we believe this should be a question for an Indiana jury. Find the article here:

I’m proud to represent ten incredibly brave clients who have come forward to tell their stories and be part of seeking the justice Indiana University has owed them for decades. My team and I will do everything in our power to ensure their voices, and the facts, are heard in court. Check out ESPN’s story on the latest developments:

At least 15 former Indiana men's basketball players are alleging improper s*xual conduct by a former team physician and saying Indiana officials, including the late coach Bobby Knight, were aware of the behavior.

Michelle Simpson Tuegel shared her thoughts with Newsweek on how the government’s case in the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial is going so far. Cassie Ventura's testimony was very powerful and showed she was not the “willing participant” the Defense is trying to portray her as, but a young woman caught in a relentless cycle of violence.

Federal prosecutors have yet to prove their case against the 55-year-old music mogul accused of running a criminal enterprise, longtime attorneys told Newsweek.
