Founding partner Michelle Simpson Tuegel’s op-ed for Law.com about an often-overlooked reality for plaintiffs’ attorneys: secondary trauma and the emotional toll of representing survivors in sexual assault, wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases.

Advocating for clients means bearing witness to deeply painful experiences, and over time, that weight can accumulate as we carry their stories with us. The work of a trial lawyer requires us to access deep levels of empathy and authenticity to connect as real people with our clients, juries, and judges. And to access sincere empathy, we have to do the work of taking care of ourselves in a way that avoids numbness to the trauma we are exposed to through our cases.
