The discussion focused on recent Texas legislative updates and their impact on court administration and local legal practice.

Bell Nunnally recently hosted its annual Ethics CLE program, “The Gray Zone,” featuring former Enron CFO Andrew Fastow, for an audience of in-house counsel, firm alumni and attorneys.

The evening offered a sobering examination of the decisions, incentives and organizational culture that contributed to Enron’s collapse — one of the most consequential corporate scandals in American history, which devastated the financial security of thousands of employees and investors.

Andrew, who pleaded guilty to federal securities fraud charges and served six years in prison, spoke candidly about his role in Enron’s downfall. He acknowledged responsibility for his actions and spoke about the consequences of his decisions, which he said continue to affect him to this day.

His experience offered a powerful reminder that what is technically permissible is not always ethically defensible — and that lawyers and business leaders have a responsibility to look beyond compliance with the rules to consider the broader consequences of their decisions.

At Bell Nunnally, we believe meaningful conversations about legal ethics require confronting difficult questions and learning from failures as well as successes. We appreciate everyone who joined us for this important discussion.

Bell Nunnally Partner Ben Riemer and associates Meredith Palmer and Monica D**e secured a unanimous $7.7 million jury verdict on behalf of MCR Oil Tools, LLC in a licensing dispute with Expro Holdings UK Limited.

Following a seven-day trial in Dallas County's 193rd District Court, the jury deliberated for about two and a half hours before finding that Expro breached the parties' license agreement. Jurors rejected Expro's defenses and counterclaims and awarded MCR the maximum damages it sought under the agreement.

The trial featured testimony from 10 witnesses, including executives from Arlington, Houston and Scotland, as well as multiple scientific experts. Texas Lawyer highlighted the team's approach of presenting a technically complex dispute as a straightforward contract case, and The Texas Lawbook also covered the unanimous verdict.
