One of the biggest misconceptions about family violence cases is that a protective order and a criminal case are the same thing.

They're not.

A protective order is a separate legal proceeding from the criminal prosecution. While they're often related, each has its own process and its own potential consequences. Understanding the difference is an important part of understanding your legal situation and avoiding complications and issues that can hurt your defense.

No two family violence cases are exactly alike. Every case has its own story, its own facts, and its own challenges. Witness statements, text messages, 911 recordings, physical evidence, and the surrounding circumstances can all play a role in how a case is evaluated.

That's why it's important to avoid assumptions. A thorough review of the facts is essential to understanding what happened and building an effective defense.

If you or someone you care about is facing a family violence allegation, taking the time to understand the details can make all the difference.

Being arrested for family violence can feel overwhelming. For many people, the uncertainty is just as stressful as the charge itself.

Understanding the process and consulting with an experienced criminal defense attorney early are the first steps toward protecting your rights, building a strong defense, and making informed decisions.

The work happens here.

This is the table where we meet with prospective clients for the first time. It’s where we listen, ask questions, sort through the details, and begin figuring out what matters most.

It’s where we connect with current clients, discuss case developments, and continue to protect their rights and futures.

It’s also where we sit down as a team to strategize, challenge our thinking, talk through cases, and look for ways to keep getting better.

Because good defense doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with listening, preparation, collaboration, and a commitment to doing the work well.

No two family violence cases are exactly alike.

It's easy to assume these cases are straightforward. In reality, they often involve complicated relationships, conflicting accounts, and facts that aren't obvious from an initial police report.

In our latest blog, Kendall Castello draws on more than 23 years of criminal law experience—including his time as Chief of the Family Violence Division at the Dallas County District Attorney's Office—to explain why every family violence case deserves to be evaluated on its own facts.

In the article, Kendall discusses:
• Why family violence cases are different from other criminal cases
• How police investigate these allegations
• Why context and evidence matter
• What to do if you've been accused of family violence

Whether you're facing allegations yourself or want to better understand how these cases work, this article offers valuable insight from both a former prosecutor and an experienced defense attorney.

As a new school year begins, families are busy preparing for what's ahead—new teachers, new routines, new schedules, and for some, the exciting transition to college.

But some of the most important preparation happens through conversations.

Back in May, Kendall had the opportunity to speak with Trinity Christian Academy students and their fathers about decision-making, responsibility, and the real-world consequences that can follow a single moment or choice.

Whether your child is starting a new grade or heading off to college for the first time, they'll soon be making more decisions on their own. Honest conversations about responsibility, safety, and good judgment today can make a lasting impact tomorrow.

We wish everyone a safe, successful school year!
