Insurance companies and city governments (think police misconduct) whole heartedly embrace the idea that a monetary settlement equals justice. While injury settlements may provide financial compensation for damages, they’re ultimately just a construct of capitalism that seem to prioritize monetary value over actual human well-being. No amount of money can truly compensate for the pain, suffering, and trauma caused by a personal injury. Sometimes it’s difficult to relate this to individuals who have been raised in a society that prioritizes money over everything else but true justice involves accountability, acknowledgement, and prevention of similar incidents in the future, rather than simply relying on financial compensation. Considering that money is so valueless that it can be printed at any time, the least that adjusters and city governments can do is fully compensate you for your injury.
We should always question and challenge the limitations of a capitalist system in seeking real justice for personal injuries. Ultimately I think our desire for more morality driven outcomes need to be proportionate to our desire for quality financial outcomes.
