A Houston officer lied to get a no knock warrant. Two homeowners were killed.

On January 28, 2019, police forced their way into the Harding Street home of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas. Officer Gerald Goines had sworn that an informant bought he**in at the house. That buy never happened. Both were killed, and five officers were hurt.

Goines was convicted of murder and sentenced to 60 years, and in August he pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges.

On November 3, Houston voters decide on Prop A, which would require officers to knock, announce themselves and wait before entering a home. It would also make small ma*****na cases a low priority. Early voting runs October 19 to 30.

If police ever come to your door with a warrant:
• Stay calm and don't resist
• Say: "I do not consent to any search. I want a lawyer."
• Let your lawyer challenge the warrant later

Can police put a GPS tracker on your car without a warrant? Usually, no.

A former Houston police officer is now charged after allegedly attaching a tracker to a man's pickup in northwest Houston in September 2025 with no warrant. Video caught it, and the owner found the device. His sergeant was suspended for 15 days.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that putting a GPS tracker on a vehicle is a search, which usually means a judge has to sign off first.

If you ever find something under your car:
• Don't destroy it
• Photograph it
• Call a lawyer

How long can police keep you at a traffic stop?

A Houston man with no record and no warrants says HPD held him more than two hours after a traffic stop so ICE could pick him up. Ten days later he was deported. His lawsuit against the city is pending.

Here's the rule: a traffic stop can only last as long as it takes to handle the reason you were stopped. Holding you longer needs a real legal reason.

If a stop is dragging on:
• Stay calm and polite
• Ask: "Officer, am I free to go?"
• If not, ask why you are being held

That Delta 8 product you bought at a corner store may carry a legal risk now.

Texas’s Delta 8 scheduling change took effect July 31. State health officials say products labeled with Delta 8 or containing more than naturally occurring trace amounts may be detained and referred to law enforcement. The change does not mean every intoxicating h**p product is banned. Texas still permits qualifying h**p products with no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC.

If questioned, ask for a lawyer before discussing what you bought or when. Share this so more Texans know the distinction.
