Gloria Steinem began her career in the early 1960s as a freelance writer with the intention to uncover the injustices that women face in society.

Her essays and reporting brought light to everything from how Pl***oy Bunnies were treated to reproductive freedom. In 1978, she wrote a semi-satirical essay for Cosmopolitan titled, “If Men Could Menstruate.” Her writing made subjects like feminism more digestible and easier to interpret for men and women all over the world at a time when very few were discussing matters of inequality.

Her shameless approach to speaking her mind coupled with her intelligence led her to become a feminist icon and an activist against social injustice.
