Gellis Law is growing, Wakulla!

When I started this firm, I gave everyone my personal cell phone number. And honestly, I loved that. I've had incredible conversations with so many of you, and building those personal connections is what being a concierge counselor is all about.

Today we remember.

Memorial Day isn't about sales, cookouts, or a long weekend. It's about the men and women who gave everything so the rest of us could have all of it.

They left their families, their homes, and their futures behind so that ours could go on. Some of them were barely old enough to vote. All of them were brave enough to stand when it mattered most.

To the fallen and to the families who carry their absence every single day, not just today: thank you will never be enough, but we say it anyway. And we mean it.

Most people know Gellis Law for estate planning — but we also handle government contracts and transportation law.

This week we filed a formal bid protest on behalf of MASCI General Contractors challenging a contract award by the City of Cape Canaveral. Combined with a recent win for Wakulla Transportation, it's been a busy stretch on the public sector side of the practice.

Some good news for Wakulla County today. 🚌

Many of you have been following the fight over Wakulla Transportation — the folks who have driven our seniors, veterans, and neighbors for 35 years. Their contract was at risk of being handed to an out-of-county provider.

Last week I had the honor of standing up for the Wakulla Senior Citizens Council and Wakulla Transportation before the state Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged in Tallahassee. Dozens of our seniors made the trip up there too, and let me tell you — that room knew exactly who this service belongs to.

The Commission agreed there were serious problems with how the bids were scored and refused to award the contract.

This morning, we got word the other bidder has officially withdrawn. Wakulla Transportation stays. 13 local jobs stay. 700 riders keep their ride.

Thank you to every neighbor who showed up, signed on, or made a call. This is what community looks like.

Our Conference Room Got a Wakulla County Makeover

When I set up the Gellis Law conference room at the Harvey-Lentz Realty Building, I knew I wanted it to feel like Wakulla County — not like a sterile law office. So I filled the walls with limited edition prints by Tallahassee artist Sherri DeLane, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Every piece tells a Wakulla story. Pinky the flamingo blown off course by Hurricane Michael. The St. Marks Lighthouse on Florida's Forgotten Coast. The Panacea Oyster Festival and Blue Crab Festival. Bo Lynn's Grocery in historic St. Marks. The Monarch Festival at St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. Even the classic films shot at Wakulla Springs. And one of my favorites — "Be Like Manatee, Do No Harm" — which isn't bad advice for an attorney either.

These are all hand-drawn, numbered prints from limited runs of 100, and each one captures something special about the place we call home.

I want my clients to walk into a room that reminds them they're working with someone who loves this community as much as they do. The Last Line of Defense

The American justice system is built on a foundation of checks and balances. Courts check legislatures. Appeals courts check trial courts. And attorneys?

We watch the watchers.

Law enforcement officers, investigators, and government agents are entrusted by society with extraordinary powers - powers that most citizens will never possess. The authority to investigate. To detain. To pursue. To deprive a person of their liberty.

These powers exist to protect us. And in the hands of honorable public servants, they do exactly that.

But power without accountability is dangerous. And when those entrusted with special authority abuse it - whether through dishonesty, personal vendettas, or outright fraud - someone must be willing to stand in the gap.

That someone is often an attorney.

We are sometimes the last bulwark between an individual and the full weight of government power. We ask uncomfortable questions. We demand evidence. We expose inconsistencies. We hold the powerful accountable to the same laws they are sworn to enforce.
It is not always popular work. But it is essential work.

The strength of a justice system is not measured by its power to convict. It is measured by its commitment to truth - even when that truth is inconvenient.
