The world is mourning Dolly Parton, who passed on August 25 at the age of 80. She spent a lifetime giving things away, from books mailed to children who had none, to money to hospitals and schools, to help for people who would never meet her. She left a remarkable legacy.

But within days the headlines had moved on to who inherits her fortune.

The short answer? Nobody knows. And that seems to be exactly how she wanted it.

Here is why that matters to you: When a will goes through probate, it becomes a public court document. In Rhode Island, it is filed with your city or town probate court, where anyone can read what you owned, what it was worth, and who received it.

A trust works differently. Assets held in a trust generally pass without probate at all, which means there is nothing filed and nothing for the public to read.

Dolly said years ago that she was working with an estate attorney, and she quietly put things in order long before anyone was asking. This is the gift she left for her family, so they can mourn their loss instead of reading about themselves in the paper. She also made sure to secure the legacy she dedicated her entire life to building.

Privacy is not a celebrity perk. It is a planning decision, and your family can make it too.

Rest in peace, Dolly. 🦋✨

Estate planning is really about one thing: making sure the people you love are taken care of.

Not sure where to start? Here’s a few things to consider that matter most:

Start early
The best time to make an estate plan is before you think you need one. Life changes, and a plan can change with it. Waiting is the only real mistake.

Name a guardian
If you have young children, naming a guardian in your will means the people who raise them are the people you chose. It is one of the most important things a parent can put in writing.

Don't forget digital assets
Photos, email, online banking, social accounts. Your family may not be able to reach any of it without instructions. A good plan includes the keys.

At Senerchia & Senerchia PC, we walk families through each step in plain language. No jargon, no pressure.

The beach bag isn’t the only thing that needs checking before Labor Day weekend. ☀️

Before the kids head back to school and you take that last long weekend trip, review:

👨‍👩‍👧 Guardian designations: Are the right people named to care for your children if you can’t?
✈️ Travel documents: Check passports, consent letters, and any documents needed for children traveling without both parents.
📱 Emergency contacts: Make sure schools, caregivers, and trusted family members have current information.
📄 Estate planning documents: Have there been changes to your family, assets, or wishes since you last reviewed your plan?

A few minutes of preparation now can help protect your family and prevent unnecessary stress later. Consider this your sign to get your legal checklist out of the summer pile: and onto the to-do list. ✅

Save this post and share it with another parent who could use a back-to-school reminder. Reach out to Senerchia & Senerchia P.C. to discuss your family’s planning needs.

A will is a letter to the probate judge. A trust can help manage assets during your lifetime and after your death: but neither is automatically the right answer for every family.

During National Make a Will Month, here are four practical steps to strengthen your plan:

1. Consult a local attorney. Estate-planning laws vary, and a plan should reflect your family, assets, and state of residence.

2. Consider gifts while you can. Gifting now may be meaningful, but it can also affect taxes, eligibility, and control: get advice first.

3. Plan for personal possessions. Clear instructions for jewelry, heirlooms, and sentimental items can help prevent confusion and conflict.

4. Update beneficiary designations. Retirement accounts, insurance policies, and other assets should align with your overall plan.

A will may nominate guardians and direct assets through probate. A properly funded trust may provide continuity, privacy, and probate avoidance for certain assets. The details matter.

Ready to protect what matters most? Start with a conversation about your family’s goals. We’re here to help you plan with confidence. 🌿

Who will care for Fido if something happens to you? 🐶

This National Dog Day, remember: your dog is family: and your plan should account for them.

A pet trust may help outline:
• Who will care for your dog
• Which routines and care instructions matter
• How funds may be used for veterinary care and daily needs
• Who steps in if your first choice cannot

Pet trusts aren’t just for the ultra-rich. They can be a practical way to provide direction and peace of mind for the companion who has always been there for you.

Ready to put a plan in place for Fido? Senerchia & Senerchia P.C. can help you explore options tailored to your family and state. Share this with a fellow dog parent! 🐾

Is your freshman headed off to college or turning 18 soon? Here is a terrifying reality check: the moment your child turns 18, the law considers them an independent adult. That means if a medical emergency happens on campus, doctors legally cannot share their health records or let you make decisions without prior legal authorization. 🎓

Before you load up the car for dorm move-in day, make sure your family legal house is in order. Essential documents like a HIPAA authorization, medical power of attorney, and financial power of attorney ensure you can still step in as your child's advocate when they need you most.

Protect your peace of mind this back-to-school season. Reach out to our team today to schedule your family legal check!
