Chas Calenda for Rhode Island Attorney General Charles "Chas" Calenda is an attorney at law and advocate for the rule of law. I have been on both sides of "aisle", so to speak, in the legal world.

I decided to run for Attorney General after watching the current officeholder put his personal politics above the very important mission of that office - the mission to always do justice and do the right thing. The people of Rhode Island need an independent Attorney General who has not been a part of the political class here in Rhode Island and isn't beholden to any politician or political party.

If elected, I promise that I will enforce the laws of Rhode Island fairly, consistently and always with one goal in mind - to do justice. For 12 years, I was a prosecutor in the Office of Attorney General. I saw victims of crime come to that office looking for justice. Now in private practice, I see many people who have been wronged by a very imperfect criminal justice system who are also looking for justice. I have also seen people taken advantage of by scammers and unscrupulous businesses that need the Office's Consumer Protection Unit to stand up for them in their hardest moments. I will not be an "activist AG," as the current Attorney General so proudly proclaims himself. I assure you, my political views will play no role in the way I plan to run that office. The job of the Attorney General is to enforce the laws on the books - not decide which laws should or shouldn't be followed. So you can disagree or agree with my personal politics - it doesn't matter because my opinions on those issues are irrelevant to the job. I worked for 12 years under Democrat administrations where I didn't necessarily agree with the political decisions being made in those offices, and there are plenty of laws I'd love to see changed. But that's the job of the General Assembly and the Governor. Help me get elected Attorney General to take the politics out of that office. Chas for AG - Independence and Integrity.

Today, I, Charles “Chas” Calenda, a Rhode Island attorney with nearly two decades of defending justice in our courts, am proud to announce that I am actively exploring a campaign for Rhode Island Attorney General in 2026.

In a time when politics too often twists the scales of justice, I am stepping forward not as a politician, but as a lawyer sworn to uphold the rule of law, and the constitutions of this state and these United States. My career has been dedicated to protecting Rhode Islanders—such as being a Special Assistant Attorney General for 12 years; defending those accused with crimes against the partisan overreach of the current administration; fighting for the local communities on the West Greenwich Town Council and Coventry Fire District; and holding government officials accountable whenever possible.

As your AG, I will prioritize integrity over ideology: defending our environment from polluters, safeguarding consumers from predatory practices, and ensuring every voice in Rhode Island is heard equally under the law. Law, not politics, will guide every decision.
