FOIA Case of the Month - Maxine Russell v. State Department
This Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) case was filed by FOIAdvocates on behalf of Maxine Russell, a grieving mother who sought records from the U.S. State Department and the FBI about the overseas homicide death of her son, Darren Russell, in China. The State Department, under the leadership of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was horrific in refusing to provide records about this incident to Ms. Russell, who simply wanted answers about the death of her son. The agency, under Secretary Clinton, attempted to stall and delay release of responsive records for many years. After filing a FOIA court action, the District Court found the actions of the State Department "disgraceful" and ordered the release of agency records. Meanwhile, co-defendant FBI, which had previously claimed they had done a comprehensive investigation of this incident in a letter to Congress, later admitted in a declaration filed in the FOIA court action that ithey had never done ANY investigation at all regarding the murder of Darren Russell in China as they had previously claimed.
