To individuals such as myself, July 4th represents a powerful symbol of the importance of upholding our rights. Patriotism, in its truest form, requires that we prioritize the preservation of our rights, including representive government, trial by jury, freedom of speech and assembly, and religious freedoms, rather than being dictated by those in power.

It was my privilege this week to defend a man wrongfully accused of assault in federal court. He is an exceptionally kind and caring individual, and someone misconstrued an act of comfort he provided (a hug and a kiss on the cheek), and conspired against him, reporting it months later as offensive for personal gain. Federal court was certainly challenging; however, our team fought hard against these false allegations.
Ultimately, our client was acquitted of two counts of simple assault, enabling him to reclaim his life and reputation, and lifting a significant burden from his family's shoulders.
It was a hard, but good week for our office.

Trial prep demands constant commitment, around the clock, nights and weekends. My drive comes from a deep passion for this work. My obsession with cases may be difficult to deal with at times, but I'm honored to be trusted with people's lives and stories. I'll keep fighting for them. I love this job and I will never be outworked.

When Veronica Montoya came to us with this case, we knew she was not guilty and a woman defending her home and family, as the law allows. We put together a Grand Jury packet with the evidence and her statement. We are lucky to have reasonable prosecutors who heard us and are grateful to the Grand Jury of Nueces County for doing the right thing. It was an honor to stand up for this family and for Veronica Montoya who was lawfully exercising her rights and protecting her family and home.

Merely claiming to be a victim does not necessarily make it so. Labels such as victim and perpetrator are frequently assigned in sexual assault cases without investigation and based solely on an accusation. Conducting a thorough pretrial investigation into the individual making the claim is crucial.
Who you hire to represent you matters.

Our office had the privilege of hearing from Anna Vasquez today, whose journey and fight for justice following a wrongful conviction are truly inspiring. She spent 13 years in prison for a crime she did not commit. Now, Anna works with the Innocence Project of Texas to help others who have been wrongfully convicted.

Had the best time speaking with Dr Kate Rodriguez- we discuss it all from being a female criminal defense lawyer, the facade of having “balance”, and how when you stop trying to be pleasing, you get really good and powerful in the courtroom. This was really fun and I had the best time discussing it all with Dr. Kate!

She’s a lawyer. She’s intelligent. She’s beautiful. She’s funny. And she’s a sh*tshow. I would say that’s the complete package💋

It was an honor to visit with Dr Owens and her students today at TAMUCC. Danice Obregon and I spoke about the need to see the human behind every case and the important work the Nueces County Mental Health Public Defender’s office does. I am proud to have helped start that organization and to be the Chair of their board where great lawyers are trained and represent the citizens who need it the most in our community.
