WHY ARE DIVORCES SO EXPENSIVE??

In case you ever wondered why divorces cost so much, depending on the county, filing fees and service can cost up to $500 or more. That is money that does not go to your attorney. Your first step past filing is a temporary orders hearing, generally an hour or two waiting for the Judge to order you to mediation. Mediation 4 hours plus a fee of $300 to $750. If you don't agree, then back to court for temporary orders 2-4 hours. Discovery takes 3-5 hours to send and 3-5 hours to respond to (at minimum).

Another required mediation 4 hours prior to final trial plus a fee of $300 to $750 again. And then finally final trial 4-8 hours. Up to $2,000 in fees plus at least 20 hours of attorney time at $300 or more an hour for $7000 means an average divorce with no agreements is $9,000.

And that is the minimum, if you are fighting over kids you can double, triple, or quadruple that amount. Fighting over a business can be ten times that amount. Just something to think about when you think about divorce.

Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour designed to exploit, control, manipulate and dominate.

Here are 5 common tactics used by coercive controllers.

1️⃣ Charm.

They put you on a pedestal, being overly attentive, buttering you up, using charm to disarm and when it suits to manipulate or just in front of others to create a false impression.

2️⃣ Co-dependence.

They cut you off from your support network, control your finances, and monitor your activities, making you feel isolated, dependent and unable to leave the relationship.

3️⃣ Gaslighting.

They distort reality to upend and manipulate you, questioning your memory, denying that something happened, making you feel like your feelings are invalid, calling you "too sensitive" or "crazy" and telling others.

4️⃣ Disrespect.

They undermine you, embarrassing you in front of others, name calling, putting you down, unpicking you, lying to you, cheating on you, and weaponizing information you have shared against you.

5️⃣ Threats.

They use physical size to intimidate, threatening family, friends or pets (those you care about the most), breaking things, punching walls, driving fast to intimidate, picking up weapons whilst talking with you, threatening to self-harm or commit sui*ide.

Narcissistic co parents will often fight like hell for their "right" to possess their children and then show remarkably little interest in actually parenting them.

They demand more days. More weekends. More holidays. More control over the schedule. They will spend thousands in court insisting that every minute belongs to them because it is their "right" to "have" the child.

Then they show a remarkable lack of interest in actually showing up for their child and parenting them.

Parenting requires attention, patience, sacrifice, homework, appointments, discipline, uncomfortable conversations, emotional availability, and putting a child's needs ahead of your own...which is in direct opposition to the narcissistic parent's total self-centeredness.

To them, children are show ponies. Property. Accessories. Parenting time is a trophy. The work of parenting is a drudgery.

They want to gain control by wearing a "parental rights" costume, but refuse to actually step into the role of involved and healthy parent.

Parental alienation doesn't usually happen overnight.

It often begins with small, repeated behaviors that slowly damage a child's relationship with a loving parent.

These behaviors may include: • Limiting or interfering with parenting time. • Withholding important information about school, medical care, or activities. • Speaking negatively about the other parent in front of the child. • Pressuring a child to choose sides. • Discouraging affection or communication with the other parent. • Creating unnecessary fear or distrust toward the other parent. • Interrupting or monitoring the child's parenting time without a legitimate reason.

Over time, these actions can have lasting effects—not only on the parent-child relationship, but also on a child's emotional health, identity, and ability to form healthy relationships later in life.

It's important to recognize that not every child who resists spending time with a parent is experiencing parental alienation. In some cases, a child's reluctance may stem from abuse, neglect, or other legitimate safety concerns. Those situations must always be taken seriously and investigated carefully.

However, when a parent intentionally undermines a safe, loving relationship between a child and the other parent without a legitimate reason, it is the child who ultimately pays the highest price.

Patterns repeatedly seen from some domestic abuse perpetrators in family court…

🚫 THEY HOLD YOU TO A STANDARD THEY DON'T APPLY TO THEMSELVES.

They'll criticize you for one minor mistake... while completely ignoring much worse behavior in themselves.

The standards they expect from you simply don't apply to them.

🚫 THEY GROSSLY EXAGGERATE CONCERNS.

I'm not talking about genuine safeguarding concerns. I'm talking about the parent who says "The child is always hungry." because they asked for a snack after school.

"The child isn't being cared for." because their hair wasn't brushed perfectly one morning.

"The child has no routine." because bedtime was half an hour later during the school holidays.

One missed phone call becomes..."They're deliberately withholding contact."

A five-minute delay becomes... "They're trying to alienate the child."

Everything is presented as a safeguarding crisis, even when it isn't.

🚫 THEY DON'T LIKE BEING CHALLENGED.

Even by their own legal team.

You will often see them go through lawyer after lawyer. Sometimes because the lawyer has refused to keep working with them, or sometimes because the perpetrator has decided the lawyer is not doing a good job.

But often, what they really mean is: The lawyer would not tell them what they wanted to hear.

They do not want advice that challenges their behavior, questions their evidence or tells them that their expectations are unrealistic. They want a professional who agrees with them.

And when that professional does not bow down to them, they become the next person who is supposedly incompetent, biased or against them.

🚫 THEY PRIORITIZE GATHERING EVIDENCE.

This is very different to a victim making a recording because they fear they won't be believed.

I've seen covert recordings produced in court where rather than de-escalating the situation, comforting a distressed child or walking away, the priority appears to be capturing the moment.

Often, the person producing the recording believes it proves the other parent is "unstable" or "abusive" because they remain calm while the other person is emotional.

But when I watch those recordings, I often find myself asking a different question:

Why was your priority to keep filming someone in obvious emotional distress, begging you to stop, rather than responding to what was happening in front of you?

That question can sometimes tell me more than the recording itself.

🚫 THEY CAN'T TOLERATE LOSING CONTROL

When boundaries are put in place, they don't adapt.

They escalate.

More emails
More applications.
More allegations.
More "evidence."

🚫 THEY CAN'T STAY ON THE ISSUE.

Ask them about one incident...

and suddenly you're hearing about something from twelve years ago.

They'll throw in dozens of unrelated allegations, because if everything is an issue, nothing gets properly examined. which is exactly what they are hoping for.
