"Yes, you have the right to take the witness stand if you go to trial. And you have the right not to take the witness stand. If you take the witness stand the prosecutor will be free to ask you any questions. If you have a prior conviction, and possibly just an arrest, it may come into evidence even if it's not supposed to come into evidence, because it may come into trial regarding motive or habit.
For example it might be something like this from the Prosecutor: "Sir, you just stated, you've never been in trouble before, but haven't you been arrested three previous times?"
And then, "Objection, your honor."
