Several changes with regard to Georgia landlord-tenant law became effective July 1, 2024. One of the new provisions states that landlords cannot demand or receive a security deposit in an amount that exceeds the equivalent of two months’ rent. Also, landlords must provide three days’ notice before filing a dispossessory for eviction due to non-payment. We are pleased to announce that on Monday, July 8, 2024, our associate attorney, Thomas Barnes, was sworn-in as Assistant Prosecutor for the Municipal Court of the City of Unadilla. Mr. Barnes will assist in providing representation for the City of Unadilla in matters pertaining to violations of the City’s ordinances and state offenses within the jurisdiction of the municipal court as allowed by Georgia law.

Terry Long’s practice with our firm focuses on litigation, government law, employment law, and collections. She is familiar with the unique challenges that must be navigated by businesses and governments whether in litigation or transactional matters, having served as in-house counsel for various departments of the State of Georgia. She also has extensive experience in human resources counseling and employment law defense. As a former Assistant Attorney General, Ms. Long represented public safety agencies such as the Georgia State Patrol, superior court judges, district attorneys, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Corrections.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUALS

Personnel policies and procedures establish an employer’s expectations and rules for employee conduct, discipline, benefits, and other critical areas. The laws referenced in policies and procedures manuals are modified from time to time by the courts and legislatures. If your company does not update its policies and procedures annually, it may not be in full legal compliance. It is also important for all of the provisions in your manual to be consistent throughout.
