Like many high school seniors, Deven Wilson loves sports, had a blast at homecoming and enjoys his part-time job. Unlike most 18-year-olds, he’s spent the last few years of his life seriously sick.

He and his family are intensely seeking a kidney from a living donor.

Just before Thanksgiving 2023, doctors initially couldn’t say why he went from playing an all-day varsity volleyball tournament for Shaler Area High School to coughing up blood and being admitted to the hospital, where he was later diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease.

After multiple frightening medical episodes — seizures, a blood clot in his heart, collapsed lungs — and more hospital stays, Deven was finally listed for a transplant in June. And now, he and his family are intensely seeking a kidney from a living donor.

After nearly 10 years in development, Piatt Cos. broke ground on the North Side Esplanade project yesterday.

Development of the 15-acre site in Manchester-Chateau has popped in and out of public consciousness since 2017. It most recently made headlines last year after its master plan gained Pittsburgh Planning Commission approval. It’s expected to cost $740 million.

In 2015, the Pittsburgh restaurant Bar Marco made headlines for eliminating tipping and replacing it with a guaranteed $35,000 annual salary, along with healthcare, paid vacation, bonuses, and partial ownership options for its full-time staff.

Co-owner Bobby Fry explained that the goal was to create financial stability and dignity for hospitality workers, reducing the uncertainty and inequity tied to tipping. The restaurant adopted a no-tipping policy while raising menu prices slightly to cover wages.

Within months, employees reported greater job satisfaction and stronger teamwork. According to Fry, profits tripled during the first two months of the new system, largely due to lower turnover, improved morale, and better service consistency.

Bar Marco’s experiment challenged long-held traditions in the U.S. restaurant industry, showing that fair pay and shared success can strengthen both staff and business.
