Which makes this the perfect week to answer four questions honestly:

1️⃣ Do you have a will or trust, and has it been reviewed in the last three to five years?
2️⃣ Have you named someone to make financial decisions if you can't?
3️⃣ Have you named someone to make medical decisions if you can't?
4️⃣ Do your beneficiary designations match what you'd actually want today?

Here's a hard truth about estate planning: there's a deadline nobody puts on the calendar. ⏳

Legal documents require capacity. That means the person signing has to understand what the document does and what they're agreeing to.

Once capacity is gone (a stroke, advancing dementia, or a sudden accident), the window closes. At that point, the only path is often guardianship or conservatorship court.

There's also the flip side: documents signed by someone who was already vulnerable can be challenged as the product of undue influence.

Planning while everyone is clear-headed protects the plan and the person.

It catches people off guard, but without legal documents in place, an unmarried partner generally has no automatic right to make medical decisions for you.

Or to access your accounts and manage your finances.
Or to inherit your home or property.

In some situations, they may not even be notified in an emergency.

Everything a marriage grants automatically has to be built on purpose here. That means wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and beneficiary designations.

If you're 62 or older with significant home equity, a reverse mortgage lets you convert some of that equity into cash without a monthly mortgage payment.

The catch: interest and fees build over time, the balance grows, and the loan comes due when you move out, sell, or pass away. That can significantly reduce what's left for your heirs.

When someone passes away, the first few days are a blur. Here's what actually needs to happen early: 📝

- Request multiple certified copies of the death certificate (you'll need more than you think)
- Locate the will, trust, and any funeral instructions
- Notify Social Security, pensions, and insurance companies
- Secure the home, vehicles, and any valuables
- Don't rush to distribute anything or close accounts

That last one matters. Well-meaning families often move assets before the legal process starts, and it creates problems later.
