Good Sunday evening friends!

I am excited to announce that the Law Office of Selena L. Flatt has expanded! My office will continue to be located at 13 S. Jefferson Avenue in Cookeville, but we will be the only tenant in the building now. When you visit the office now, you will see a different setup and structure, but most of the same smiling faces. I am pleased to have assembled the following team around me to better serve you:

Abby Roberts: Paralegal
Melena Dishman: Office Manager
Alyson Shaw: Legal Assistant
Shauna Jackson: Receptionist

I am pleased to have each of these ladies assisting me to serve you better. Thank you all for your support and trust. I value each of you, and I thank the Lord for His hand on this business, on me, on my family, on my staff, and on you. This business is nothing without Him.

I look forward to continuing to serve Him and assisting you. Thank you again for your support, and stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks!

In 2013, Randal Gilliam attended the inaugural Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference Trial Advocacy School in Memphis. The following year he was invited back as faculty—the only prosecutor from the 31st District ever to serve in that role. For 13 consecutive years he has returned to the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law to teach trial skills to prosecutors from across Tennessee.

In March 2026, Randal completed his 13th consecutive year as a faculty member teaching direct and cross examination—crucial trial skills. The same preparation and commitment Randal brings to Memphis every year is what he will bring to this office every day.

Wishing each of you love, joy, and peace in His presence this Christmas! I pray that each of you enjoy this time of celebration and worship of Jesus with your family, friends, and those close to you!

The office will be closed until January 5, 2026. Text messages, emails, Facebook messages, and voicemails will not be returned until January 5, 2026, unless you have an emergent matter - i.e. a court date before January 5, 2026 on some type of emergent matter such as an Order of Protection or an emergency Restraining Order. If you have an emergent matter, please say that in your message and I will respond as soon as possible.

This week I defended Gregory Cantrell on three “A” felonies, a “C” felony, and an “E” felony. These included Murder in the 2nd Degree, Felony Murder, Aggravated R**e, Tampering with Evidence, and Abuse of a Co**se. The jury returned a guilty verdict solely on an “A” misdemeanor, Reckless Endangerment. The jury acquitted Mr. Cantrell of every other charge!!!! Had Mr. Cantrell been found guilty of those charges, he would have likely spent the rest of his life in prison.

I genuinely believed and continue to believe in Mr. Cantrell’s innocence. Our great country provides that each and every citizen has certain rights under our United States Constitution, and one of those is the right to receive a fair trial by a jury of your peers. The burden of proof is on the state in a criminal case, and they must prove an individual guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The proof in this case failed to show that Mr. Cantrell was guilty of the things the state charged him with beyond a reasonable doubt.

I would like to thank the jury for their service to the citizens of Warren County. I would also like to say that Assistant District Attorney Daniel Barnes made a valiant effort for the State of Tennessee. While I vehemently disagree with his assertions in this case, I respect the position he holds and the work he did in representing the state. I would like to thank my assistants - Melena Dishman and Alyson Shaw for their hard work in this case. I would like to thank my “intern” Abby Roberts for joining us this week and assisting in the trial. I would like to thank Attorney Mark Tribble for his continued mentorship. Never think you don’t need good counselors because their wisdom is priceless! I appreciate the confidence the Court placed in me to represent Mr. Cantrell and the confidence and trust Mr. Cantrell and his family placed in me to help them through this. Most of all, though, I am thankful to the Lord for His faithfulness. I could not do what I do without Him.
