Amazon stopped selling certain high-speed “e-bikes” to California.

And parents need to understand why.

Some of the machines being marketed as e-bikes aren't legally e-bikes at all.

They're capable of motorcycle-like speeds—and we're seeing teenagers riding them on streets, sidewalks, inside businesses, and around pedestrians who have absolutely no idea what's coming.

The consequences have been devastating.

We've seen serious crashes.

We've seen fatalities.

And now we're seeing cases where parents themselves are facing criminal charges after allegedly allowing their children to operate high-powered electric motorcycles illegally.

⚖️ Chris' warning to parents:

Before buying one of these for your child, don't just ask:

“How fast does it go?”

Ask:

👉 Is it actually a legal e-bike?

👉 Is my child old enough to operate it?

👉 Does it require a license, registration, or insurance?

👉 Where can it legally be ridden?

👉 And most importantly—does my child have the maturity and experience to operate something capable of these speeds?

California law draws a very important line between an e-bike and what is legally a moped or motorcycle.

Amazon restricting the sale of high-speed models isn't happening in a vacuum.

It's happening while communities across California are dealing with the consequences.

Parents: know what you're buying before you hand over the keys—or the throttle.

Because if something goes terribly wrong, saying “I thought it was just an e-bike” may not protect your child...

Thankfully, no one suffered life-threatening injuries.
This is exactly why every state has some form of a Move Over Law.

When you see emergency lights—or any stopped emergency, tow, or service vehicle—you should:

👉 Move over if it's safe to do so.
👉 If you can't move over, significantly slow down.
👉 Put the phone away and focus on the road.

💰 If someone is injured in a crash like this...

The distracted driver may be responsible for:

👉 Pain and suffering
👉 Property damage

And because this happened during a traffic stop, there could be multiple injured victims with separate claims.

Whenever something like this happens, there are really two separate investigations.

The first focuses on the driver:

👉 Were they impaired?
👉 Did their actions cause the fatal crash?

The second may examine everything that happened beforehand, including the earlier traffic stop, to determine whether proper procedures were followed. In this case, the sheriff's office later announced that its internal investigation concluded the deputy did not have legal grounds to make a DUI arrest during that stop.

💰 For the victim's family...

A wrongful death claim may be available against the person responsible for causing the crash.

If other parties were legally responsible in some way, attorneys would investigate those facts carefully—but those determinations depend on the evidence, not just the outcome.

⚠️ The biggest takeaway?

Never assume someone who appears impaired won't get back behind the wheel.

But it also doesn't automatically shield the city from responsibility.

Investigators will want to know:

👉 Why did the rear-end collision happen?
👉 Were the officers responding to an emergency?
👉 Were lights or sirens in use?
👉 Were they operating the ATVs reasonably for the crowded conditions?
👉 Could the collision have been avoided?

💰 If innocent pedestrians were injured because of negligent operation, they may have claims against the responsible parties, which could include the governmental entity, subject to the laws and procedures that apply to claims against public agencies.

⚠️ Rear-end crashes aren't just dangerous on highways.

This case highlights something many people don't realize:

A criminal case and a civil case serve two very different purposes.

A criminal case focuses on whether someone committed a crime.

In this case, the City of Sacramento admitted liability, so the jury's job wasn't to decide who caused the crash.

Instead, the jury was asked to determine what amount of compensation was fair for the children who lost their father.

Until you remember these crashes can cause some pretty serious injuries.
If passengers were injured, investigators would likely ask:

👉 Why did the driver swerve?
👉 Was the golf cart being driven recklessly?
👉 Was alcohol involved?
👉 Was the golf cart designed to carry four people?
👉 Were seat belts available and being used?

If the driver's careless actions caused the crash, they could potentially be responsible for injuries suffered by their passengers.

People tend to treat golf carts like toys.

They're not.
