Domestic violence is about far more than a punch - it's about coercive control. And while, statistically, women are the usual targets, it can and does happen to anyone, regardless of gender.

Attorney Jennifer A. Nielsen's statement on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg: I employ a team of four extraordinarily talented and dedicated women who balance family and work in creative ways, in order to help our clients, regardless of gender, through some of the toughest times in their lives.

Like Justice Ginsburg, the attorneys of Nielsen Law are dedicated to a world in which none of our loved ones encounter discrimination “on the basis of sex.”

My great-grandmother, Jessie Miller VanArsdale, pictured below, was a determined and brilliant woman. She graduated from law school in 1918 – a year before the ratification of the 19th Amendment gave her the legal right to vote. After being admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1931, she spent the majority of her law career as a stenographer. No one would employ her as an attorney – because she was a woman.

I enjoy far greater success and satisfaction in my legal career than my great-grandmother ever did, in large part due to the work of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She pioneered the Constitutional jurisprudence that made it illegal to discriminate “on the basis of sex.” This freedom has allowed Nielsen Law to become the innovative, tech-forward, people-centered legal team that it is today.

Below, next to the pictures of my great-grandmother, is a print of RBG. The original artwork, by local artist J Shepard Studio, hangs on my office wall to remind me that we stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us.

Rest in Power, Justice Ginsburg, and may her memory be a blessing.

Fight, flight, freeze...or fawn? This is an excellent blog post on how to recognize the trauma reaction of fawning, and how it can leave one vulnerable to abuse.

You can find the full text of Governor DeWine's "Shelter In Place" order at this link. Parents should note that travel for parenting exchanges has been deemed ESSENTIAL.

STATEMENT ON "SHELTER IN PLACE PREPAREDNESS:" Today, we sent clients an email to assist them with preparations for a "shelter in place" order. We are reproducing it here in order to help our wider community think through difficult issues that may arise.

"In light of the steps Italy and San Francisco have taken to restrict the free movement of citizens, and in light of the resolute nature of the steps our governor has taken in order to stop the spread of COVID-19, we are advising our clients to take the following steps, NOW. As in, if you have the ability, stop what you are doing right now and take these steps:

FIRST - RIGHT NOW
***make sure that your household has enough food and personal care items for 2 weeks (as grocery delivery services may be a bit backed up)
***refill all prescriptions that you are allowed to refill NOW
SECOND - email my assistant, to let us know the following:
which of your household members (incl children) have pre-existing diabetes, high blood pressure, heart, kidney, or lung problems (incl allergic asthma), autoimmune issues, or are immunocompromised
***if your adult household members are allowed to work from home, and if so, for how long;
***if your child(ren) (if applicable) are in daycare, and if so, where
***if anyone in your household has been confirmed as having, or has any symptoms of, COVID-19 (chart attached), and describe the symptoms
***whether anyone in your household is missing vital supplies that they cannot live without for the next 2 weeks
***if you are coparenting, as much of this information you have about the person (usually your ex) whom you are coparenting with, and where your kids are scheduled to be this afternoon/evening through this Friday

We believe that prompt, calm preparedness is necessary right now, and that if Ohio does impose a curfew or broader lockdown, it will be a necessary step to save lives. We realize that parenting plans will present some complex issues during this time, and we are working on how to address these issues as they arise."

Nielsen Law has been conducting all client meetings via telephone and videoconference since March 2nd, and we are well-prepared to continue. Take care, everyone.

STATEMENT ON COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS PREPAREDNESS: At Nielsen Law, it is our guiding principle to anticipate potential problems and, using our experience and ingenuity, create a protective plan for our clients. In that spirit, we have been working hard to fulfill our responsibility to protect our clients, employees, and neighbors during the inevitable arrival of the COVID-19 coronavirus. As the virus may be spread for an astonishing 10-14 days (and possibly up to a month) before an unknown carrier shows symptoms, we acknowledge the possibility that the virus is already here, and spreading in central Ohio.

Among those of us who contract COVID-19, 80% of us will experience minor symptoms. However, because so much is unknown about who amongst us will be the 20% most at risk of severe complications from this virus, it is our responsibility as citizens and good neighbors to minimize the possibility of transmission.

During this time, Nielsen Law will be leveraging our extensive technology infrastructure to effectively serve our clients remotely wherever possible.

However, when an in-person meeting is necessary, you can rest assured that we have done our research. We have deployed old-fashioned best-practice measures and protective gear, and the most effective and non-toxic disinfectants that eradicate flu, norovirus, AND coronavirus on surfaces.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. Nielsen Law remains ready to serve you during the upcoming weeks, and we send our best wishes to you and your families.

As with all past outbreaks, this one will eventually come to an end.

A much-needed change in our laws.
