Attorney Abby Chin on what her father taught her about the clients she serves:

My dad's family came over from China to Ohio in the 1960s and did what so many Asian families do in small Midwestern towns: they opened a restaurant. His family's was one of two Chinese restaurants in Dayton. He grew up in that restaurant, learned English and Ohio. He eventually moved to Upper Arlington, started a family, and drove a truck.

He was a big guy with a darker complexion for a Chinese person. The cops in the suburb would see him coming down the street and pull him over wondering who is that guy driving that truck?
He never made a big deal out of it or complained. He just absorbed it and kept going.

I didn't understand what that meant as a kid. It wasn't until I got older that I started to understand what he'd been carrying all those years. He never said it was hard. But I think it was.

I think about him sometimes when I'm sitting with a client who's absorbing everything quietly, trying to act the way they think they're supposed to act. That instinct runs deep in a lot of people.
Part of my job is recognizing it. And creating enough room that they don't have to.
