Captain Jonathan D. Grassbaugh Veterans Project

Captain Jonathan D. Grassbaugh Veterans Project The Grassbaugh Veterans Project provides legal assistance to veterans facing issues that require an attorney's help to reach a solution expeditiously.

Captain Jonathan D. Grassbaugh was killed in action on April 7, 2007 in Zaganiyah, Iraq. His personal motto was non sibi, which means "not for oneself." He believed with all of his heart in selfless service and in reaching out to help those less fortunate. His legacy will carry on in perpetuity thanks to his wife, Captain Jenna C. nd founder of the Captain Jonathan D. Grassbaugh Veterans Project. Under the supervision of qualified lawyers from the Ohio National Guard and civilian sector, Ohio State law students work hand-in-hand with veterans who have served their country heroically to resolve legal disputes, including landlord-tenant issues, debt crises, foreclosures, and Rule 60 Default Judgments. The long-term goal is to help veterans gain access to their benefits related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

I just wanted to post an update. Like most things, COVID has put a halt to our ability to meet with clients and our awesome volunteer lawyer supervisors. Despite this, 4 returning 3Ls will be joined by 3 new 3Ls and 5 new 2Ls in the fall when we hope to return to serving Veterans in central Ohio with consumer and housing issues. I want to thank all my previous Grassbaugh Fellows and our supervisors, and I so look forward to working with each of our new student Fellows! ⚖️ Stay healthy!

Grassbaugh Fellows in the wild at our annual CLE. Thanks to Jones Day and Legal Aid Society of Columbus for your unwavering support.

The Grassbaugh Veterans Project started the academic year with 3 returning 3L Fellows and one who is abroad this semester, two new 3Ls and five new 2L Fellows. We continue to screen and accept veteran clients in central Ohio with housing and consumer related legal issues and have completed a few other sorts of cases as our bandwidth allows. A few Fellows spent the day helping at the Stand Down in Chillicothe and gave away GVP thermal mugs while answering questions from local vets.

The 2017-2018 Grassbaugh Fellows got me this amazing gift for supervising them this year. This group of students never stopped caring deeply or fighting like crazy for our clients. It’s a privilege to work with them. I’m really going to miss the 2018 grads but I’m confident in our rising leaders and excited about our incoming rising 2Ls!

I’m incredibly excited to share that I’ll be attending the ROTC drill hall renaming dedication ceremony at Johns Hopkins this Friday, May 4th. The cadets from the Hopkins ROTC program have worked tirelessly for several years to petition the university faculty to rename the drill hall in Jon’s honor, and the the university has finally agreed to make it official!

I will also be the guest speaker at the ROTC awards ceremony later that same evening at which, among other things, we’ll present the annual CPT Jonathan Grassbaugh Scholarship to a Cadet who embodies exemplary leadership qualities. Looking forward to these two amazing events - updates and pictures to follow!

Yesterday two of my amazing 3Ls Grassbaugh Fellows served process on a person who we won a judgment against in a housing case, but who was in the wind. One of them became a Deputy Process Server and they caught this person at a criminal court date. Suffice it to say we were amused, said defendant, not so much!

Shout out to the Grassbaugh Fellows and our volunteer attorney supervisors. We have done training and had an enjoyable meet and greet luncheon in the last two weeks. We have a number of active cases in the areas of housing and consumer law. Huge thanks to our law student fellows: Kelsey K, Brian, Lauren, Kelsey M, Abby, Andrea, Beverly, Danny and Lyndsey. Also to our supervisors: Duncan, Amanda, Joe, Matt, Adam and future supervisors Michael and Karin. Couldn't do it without you all!

I vividly remember sitting in the Moritz Moot Court office in the fall of 2012 (no doubt while I was supposed to be reading from an obnoxiously heavy case book for class) and experiencing one of those rare, remarkable moments of clarity in which I knew that there was something I needed to do. That something was the creation of the Grassbaugh Veterans Project, though I had no idea how it would work or what it would entail at the time - all I knew was that I was in possession of life insurance funds signifying the worst day (and ensuing nightmare) of my life, and I felt compelled to use those funds to help others without the resources to help themselves. $250,000 seemed like the right amount to attract some attention and demonstrate I was serious about this endeavor, and a fundraising campaign to "match" that amount sounded equally compelling. What COULDN'T we accomplish with half a million dollars?

The good news is that we'll now get to find out. Just over 3 years since the creation of the Grassbaugh Veterans Project, we have officially exceeded our goal of "matching" that initial $250,000 endowment, and we have the wonderful, generous individuals of "Women & Philanthropy" to thank. On the evening of June 7th, the Women & Philanthropy foundation selected the Grassbaugh Veterans Project to receive a donation of $52,500. Over 50 applicants were considered, and the Grassbaugh Veterans Project was one of 3 selected to receive a grant. At a time when women all over the world (and, in particular, the military) are literally breaking glass ceilings, this is a remarkable gift signifying more than just numbers on a piece of paper. This is the achievement of the goal we've used to signify the true meaning and permanency of what was once no more than an ambitious vision, and I have so many people to thank for making this possible. Below is a very recent photo from Arlington from Memorial Day weekend - a bittersweet reminder of how much we often have to lose to appreciate what we have and turn that appreciation into something bigger than ourselves.

With this recent milestone, Jon is undoubtedly smiling. I am smiling, Jon's family is smiling, Cybele is smiling, Erin is smiling, the GVP fellows - past and present - are smiling, and it's all thanks to those that believed us when we said that with half a million dollars, there was nothing that we couldn't do. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am truly overcome with emotion and moved to tears. WE DID IT!!

His wife wanted to honor him with something that would have a similar approach, some sort of memorial that could provide services to those in need. That memorial is the Capt. Jonathan D.
