Happy Birthday to one of our favorites here at Shroy Law. We believe that it is no coincidence that this lovely lady's birthday falls during !

After her graduation from Colombia law school in 1959, Ruth went on to become the director of the women's rights project in the ALCU. There she argued for gender equality in front of the supreme court, arguing that the law should be blind to a persons gender.

In 1993 she was appointed to the supreme court, where she would serve as only the second female justice ever, as well as the first Jewish female justice.

In 1999 she was awarded the American Bar Association's Thurgood Marshall award for her efforts towards gender equality.

Yesterday, January 24, the Washington state attorney general settled with Johnson and Johnson regarding the state's current opioid crisis.

PBS reported that from 1999-2021 there have been more than 1 million deaths caused by overdose, and that the majority are opioid related.

"Under the deal, the state and local governments would have to spend $123.3 million to address the opioid crisis, including on substance abuse treatment, expanded access to overdose-reversal drugs and services that support pregnant women on substances. The rest of the money would go toward litigation costs."

Attorney General Bob Ferguson's announcement Wednesday comes as opioid overdose deaths have risen across the state, with 2,048 in 2022. That's more than twice as many deaths as there were in 2019.
