Black History in Bronzeville (The King-Lincoln District)
We will end this fantastic journey through the richness and beauty of the King-Lincoln/Bronzeville area with the place we call home: the former Alpha Hospital.
Built in 1920, the Alpha Hospital, now the Alpha Building, was the first black hospital in Columbus. The hospital was established by Dr. William Method and Dr. R. M. Tribbitt, who provided services from 1920 to 1923 when black physicians were not allowed to practice in white hospitals. When the hospital closed, Dr. Method converted it into the commercial building that still stands today. Dr. Method served as the Medical Director for the Supreme Life and Casualty Company, was a part of many progressive civic and race movements, and was featured in a mural by artist Jeff Abraxas along with jazz greats Billie Holiday, Dizzie Gillespie, and Duke Ellington.

Black History in Bronzeville (The King-Lincoln District)
[From the early 1800s to the construction of Interstate 71 in the late 1950s, Bronzeville was full of Black-owned businesses and homes. In 1922, African Americans in east Columbus owned such banks as the "Adelphi Loan and Savings Company" and a mortgage granting company called "Credential". They also established a Black insurance firm entitled "Columbus Supreme life and Casualty Company" in 1919. The first African American church in Columbus was the St. Paul A.M.E erected in 1823. The 2nd Baptist church located on 17th St. was the second Black church erected in Columbus, and was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The heart of Bronzeville was along a stretch of Long Street which was a residential corridor with commercial pockets, while Mt. Vernon St. to the north was the strong center of commerce. By the 1920’s, in the Jefferson-Garfield blocks on E. Long St., there were 10 Black physicians, 6 dentists, 10 churches, 2 drug stores, 2 undertakers, and over 100 African American-owned homes.]

Black History in Bronzeville (The King-Lincoln District)
Born in Alabama in 1940, Clara Rumph found her passion and life’s work in making women look and feel beautiful as a cosmetologist in the King-Lincoln District. After attending beauty school, Clara found work working in a few basement salons but ultimately founded her own beauty shop. Aries Beauty Salon opened in the late 70’s at 771 E. Long Street, a few doors down from the Lincoln Theater. Ms. Clara made a name for herself during a time when the Jehri Curl was a very popular hair style worn by the African American Community. On Saturday’s Ms. Clara’s shop was always bustling with ladies aiming to achieve the latest hair styles of the moment. Ms. Clara retired from the hair business around 2009 and sold her shop on Long Street. She passed away in 2012 leaving an amazing positive influence on her clients and family.
