Student Advocates for Mental Equality at Ohio State

Student Advocates for Mental Equality at Ohio State SAME

The purpose of this organization is to increase awareness of the struggles that people with mental illnesses go through and to decrease the stigma that surrounds those who have mental illnesses. Also to provide a student support group for people who need a safe accepting place in order for them to share their experiences and not be afraid of any judgement. Through activities like community service

, fundraisers, speeches, walks, and relay events, we will give back to the community and in turn help those who are struggling.

"I struggle with seasonal effective disorder and while everyone is gearing up for the impending holiday season, I struggle with depression, anxiety, and fatigue. For others that fear the holiday season coming up especially being around others that don't understand your sadness, I'm here for you and with you. You're not alone and it's not our fault that we're sad."

"Coming to Ohio State, I wanted to leave all my mental health burdens at home and have a fresh start here. But soon, I realized that it's something that will follow me wherever I go. I'm usually one to hide behind my disorders and avoid ever talking about the past, but I'm learning more and more everyday about accepting myself and using my struggles to become an advocate. If someone needs me to pour their heart out to and find consolation in, or even if they only need a good laugh, I want to be that person for them that can help them feel better and know that they're not alone."

“This world that we live in is beautifully terrifying: Beautiful in the way that it is endless and full of chances, and terrifying in the same way. From the minute we arrive here we are constantly experiencing not only the physical, expansive world, but the world inside our minds as well. It is just as vast, just as powerful. Some believe that we should know this mental world of ours; every nook and cranny. But the truth is, we never will. Some days will be brighter than others; some days the light won’t shine at all. It is our responsibility to accept this and be cognizant of others and where they stand in their world.
I started Student Advocates for Mental Equality because I want to spark a change. A change in how people view one another and spreading acceptance. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to be afraid. It’s okay to be defeated. We are all humans beings in this world, and this world is too big for stigma.”

"I think that there's this widespread belief that you have to be happy all the time. Always fulfilled, out to conquer the world. That's totally not the case at all. The beauty of the human experience is that we have good days and bad days. And the best thing to hold on to is the belief that the bad days will pass."

"Do you think there is a strong stigma on people with mental illness?"

"There is! I think in a lot of ways, it's pitied. It's not frowned-upon, but a lot of people feel sorry for them or view them as weak, which I don't agree with, but I think is a huge stigma."

Hellloo!

So recap of Monday's meeting if you missed it...

We discussed possible logos for the club which will be decided soon! And it'll be rad.

Possible places to volunteer at this year were also discussed so we will talk about that more at the next meeting!

We did some arts and crafts (aka taped facts to candy and made a poster) but it was a grand time! And we discussed our "humans of New York" idea (still nameless) which we have now put into action...

Some of us are going to be out on the oval next Thursday, the 22nd (10-11 and 2-3) spreading awareness about mental health with candy!! We will also be asking people to say something about mental health and taking their picture (or it can be anonymous) to post and share on this page! And we invite anyone to help us do this or just hang with us for a bit!

Also we took a photo (now the cover photo) so you can see who the officers are!!

Peace love and fall break
