The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel has graciously invited me to participate in its Mid Atlantic Fellowship Institute. At our first meeting in DC, we were encouraged to view their collection of videos. This one on Financial Power of Attorney documents is helpful to the public. Done right, a Power of Attorney can avoid a costly, intrusive, and public guardianship proceeding.

Learn key steps to plan for dementia, avoid guardianship, and choose trusted agents. ACTEC experts explain Powers of Attorney, capacity, safety, and costs.

Estate Planning. It’s not my side gig. It’s not an add on or something I plan to scale. I care for each client one at a time on the client’s timeline and I draft each document myself. In a world that demands volume, I choose quality over quantity. I don’t rely on software, AI, or assistants to do my legal work. It might be old fashioned, but I enjoy putting pen to paper and working with clients to create plans that work and documents that make sense.

We need a Register committed to moving forward and adopting technology to reduce costs and save time. I hope you will vote for and support Ajile Brown for Register of Wills for HowardCounty.

Maryland’s new “Glock” law is set to take effect on January 1, 2027. While the law prevents the sale or transfer of hand guns with a cruciform trigger bar, it does not prohibit a direct inheritance of these fi****ms.

Our legislators have recessed for the year so it’s time to look ahead to new rules for estates, trusts, and probate.

House Bill 174 passed and has been approved by the Governor allowing transfer on death designations for certain marine vessels and vehicles.

House Bill 738 allowing for transfer on death deeds for real property in Maryland has also passed.

Stay tuned for a full report of estate planning and probate laws going into effect this year.
