Does a majority-woman jury change the odds of an NGRI verdict?

In the Lindsay Clancy case, the jury’s gender makeup has sparked a bigger question: could having a majority-woman jury matter when the defense is arguing Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI)?

There’s research on gender differences in attitudes toward mental illness, criminal responsibility, and punishment, but what do the numbers actually tell us?

And more importantly: could those differences translate into a different outcome at trial?

We’re breaking down the gendered statistics, what they can—and can’t—tell us about this jury, and why NGRI cases are so difficult to predict.

Would you expect a majority-woman jury to be more receptive to an insanity defense?

You heard it here, from a forensic psychiatrist: someone with psychosis can still make plans, can still act out their normal day-to-day routine, in fact that’s the case more often than not.

One psychiatrist. Three major cases.

Dr. Phillip Resnick has a surprising connection to Casey Anthony, Andrea Yates, and Lindsay Clancy… three cases involving mothers accused of the unimaginable.

Dr. Phillip Resnick was the final key defense witness for Lindsay Clancy.

Resnick personally evaluated Clancy and testified that she was “frankly psychotic” at the time, describing a delusion in which she believed an outside force was controlling her.

He also called the acts “altruistic filicide” — when a parent, through a distorted belief, thinks they are protecting their children as a result of this act.

Three cases.
One forensic psychiatrist.
And decades spent studying one of the darkest questions in criminal psychology:

When does severe mental illness become a defense?
