Wilber Rafael Garces Perez was shot in the back by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer after the officer sideswiped the 28-year-old's car early Sunday afternoon, attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch told reporters at a Monday news conference. Garces Perez was then taken to the hospital, and his family was notified four hours later that he had been taken to the South Texas Processing Center in Pearsall, Texas, approximately a two-hour drive away from Austin, Lincoln-Goldfinch said.

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, the 28-year-old Venezuelan national shot by an ICE officer on Sunday, said in a phone call on Monday that he's "not doing well."

“Almost 200,000 children have been ordered removed from the US by immigration judges since Trump returned to the White House, a doubling of such court orders since January 2025, according to analysis of data from the Department of Justice’s executive office for immigration review (EOIR) conducted by the California-based advocacy Mobile Pathways and shared with the Guardian. The advocacy group has focused its numbers on children appearing in immigration court, regardless of whether they arrived in the US alone or with family, and believes the total to be an undercount.”

🇦🇫 There’s a reason participating in Afghan legal clinics feels deeply personal to me.

I’m the daughter and granddaughter of people who served our country through the Marine Corps and Department of Defense. Service is part of my family’s DNA, and that legacy has shaped my commitment to showing up for others.

That legacy also helps me recognize the sacrifices and dedication reflected in the stories of my Afghan clients and colleagues. Over the years, those relationships have made this work about so much more than immigration law. It has become personal.

My Christian faith deepens that calling, reminding me of the importance of welcoming the stranger, seeking justice, and caring for our neighbors in need.

I’m grateful for the trust my clients place in us, for the Afghan colleagues who have taught me so much, and for the opportunity to serve people who have given so much.
