Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A. is a professional association of lawyers engaged in the general practice of law. This professional association, chartered in 1975 by the trio of I.S. Leevy Johnson, William T. Battiste, III, is an outgrowth of the sole proprietorship founded in 1968 by I.S. Leevy Johnson. Originally, the firm limited its practice to accident cases, criminal defense and domestic disputes. The practice has now expanded to become a full service law firm with individual lawyers concentrating in specific areas like personal injury, workers compensation, car wrecks, criminal defense, DUI defense, probate, nursing home neglect, and medical malpractice. The firm has grown throughout its existence to a current size of 5 attorneys and a support staff of eight. Each member of the firm brings to the association a variety of experience, a wealth of knowledge and an enduring commitment to the legal profession and to the communities that are served. He previously served as a member of the South Carolina General Assembly, where he also made history in 1970 by becoming one of the first African Americans elected to serve since Reconstruction.
