School is back in session across Howard County, and a few weeks in, a lot of co-parents are finding that the summer schedule that worked in July does not work anymore. Pickups moved, practices got added, and the exchange that used to happen at noon on Sunday now collides with homework.

Small adjustments between two parents who get along do not need a lawyer. Write them down, even in a text, so both of you have the same version.

The trouble starts when one parent treats the change as permanent and the other treats it as a favor. If the school-year routine is going to be the routine from now on, it belongs in the custody order. In Maryland, a court can modify a custody order when there has been a material change in circumstances and the change serves the best interest of the child. A new school, a new job schedule, or a child who is now old enough for activities that did not exist at the last hearing can all qualify.

⚖️ Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | September 15–October 15

✨ Sonia Sotomayor made history in 2009 as the first Hispanic justice on the United States Supreme Court. Born to Puerto Rican parents and raised in the Bronx, her journey has inspired generations of aspiring lawyers.

✨ Gustavo “Gus” García helped argue Hernandez v. Texas before the Supreme Court in 1954, challenging the exclusion of Mexican Americans from jury service and helping secure a landmark victory for equal protection.

✨ Reynaldo Guerra Garza broke barriers with his appointment to the federal bench in 1961 and later served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Born in Brownsville, Texas, his career helped open doors for generations of Mexican American lawyers and judges.

Their stories remind us why representation matters—in our profession, in our courtrooms, and in the communities we serve. 💜
