During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we celebrate survivors and those still fighting. We praise their determination in battling a disease that effects roughly one in eight women.

We honor the legacy of warriors such as Tamekia Hunter Ross. Though we lost Tamekia, who was with us at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel from the time the firm was founded, last year after a brave seven-year battle, her efforts to educate and to ensure that no woman fights alone live on.

And we honor the spirit of those who have survived breast cancer, such as founding partner Malissa Burnette.

Congratulations to law clerk Siri Cortez, one of only three recipients of this year’s Milestone Trial LawHER Scholarship. Siri won the top scholarship of $25,000. The prestigious award supports women who plan to become plaintiff’s trial lawyers and promotes gender diversity in the legal profession. It’s one of the largest law scholarships available for women in the country. Siri has noted that her work at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, a women-owned firm, has given her a first-hand view of how important diversity is to a fulfilling and successful legal career.

Nekki Shutt joined a number of legal luminaries this week as a panelist at “The Power of Us: Women Leading Law & Legacy,” the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association’s annual conference. Burnette Shutt & McDaniel is deeply saddened by the loss of Harriet Hancock, a true giant in the legal and civil-rights communities. A Columbia native who enrolled in law school at age 48, Harriet had just one question when one of her three children came out in 1980: How can I help? She dedicated the rest of her life to doing exactly that. She founded the first PFLAG chapter in the Southeast and co-founded Palmetto AIDS Life Support Services. She also helped lead the first Pride march in South Carolina. The Harriet Hancock Center in Columbia, named in her honor, continues to support and serve the LGBTQ+ community.

Harriet was a once-in-a-generation leader and an icon. She loved the LBGTQ+ community unconditionally. To her, its members were family, not outcasts.

Our hearts are with Harriet's family, including her grandson Tommy Gordon, who is part of our Burnette Shutt & McDaniel family. We are grateful to carry a piece of her legacy with us through him.

Twenty-five years ago, the work day started with a horrifying sequence. The World Trade Center. The Pentagon. Shanksville, Pa. The nation reeled from the morning's events, and outrage took hold across the country. Yet, almost as quickly, resolve replaced dismay. First responders charged heroically into the sites of the attacks. Volunteers signed up to join the armed forces and serve the country in the coming fight against the terrorists. Neighbors helped neighbors. We came together as Americans.

Today, we remember the thousands of lives lost, both in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and in the military conflicts afterward. Yet we also remember how the country refused to let a tragedy define or divide us and how we rallied as a nation.

Spreading the good word across the country: Burnette Shutt & McDaniel attorney Ashley Pennington was a co-presenter recently at the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Criminal Justic Policy Forum meeting. The topic of the talk was lessons learned over a decade since the reinvigoration of the Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council in 2015. Ashley served on the council during his time as a public defender and, later, as a community representative. The council’s goal: to collaboratively address issues facing the justice system. Ashley introduced legal representation for Charleston County low-income defendants at initial bond settings, a first in South Carolina, and better interagency policy development to improve reliability, safety and fairness for all.

We will fight for as long as it takes to try to make things right for workers involved in disputes involving wages, contracts or non-compete agreements.
