I was on WLTX News19 last Friday to discuss the pre-trial hearing for Alex Murdaugh's upcoming trial. Judge McCaslin ruled that the Murdaugh trial won't be held in the 14th Judicial Circuit to protect his constitutional right to a fair trial. Defense Attorneys pushed for Charleston, and the State argued against it due to cost/logistics. Change of venue analysis: Similar demographics versus financial impact.

DISMISSED: After four years and a trial date scheduled, the State dismissed my Client's charges for (1) Assault & Battery by Mob, 1st degree (Death results), (2) Assault & Battery by Mob, 2nd degree (Serious bodily injury results), and (3) Poss. weapon during violent crime.

My Client was facing up to 60 years imprisonment if convicted as charged. The nightmare of being arrested and falsely accused is finally over!

In addition to that dismissal, the South Carolina Supreme Court granted certiorari on another one of my appeals this week.

PROUD to announce that Greenville Criminal Defense Attorney Chad Propst was recently selected to Greenville Business Magazine's "Legal Elite" for the Criminal-General practice area.

Dedicated Criminal Defense Attorney

Chad Propst is a dedicated South Carolina criminal defense attorney representing clients throughout the Upstate, with a strategic focus on Greenville and Spartanburg counties. He has successfully defended individuals against a wide array of charges, including driving under the influence (DUI), drug offenses, domestic violence, criminal sexual conduct, murder, and complex felony cases.

Philosophy & Approach

Throughout his career practicing criminal defense, Chad has developed a strong recognition that when a person is facing criminal charges, their family, children, and friends are affected too. At stake is a person’s liberty, as well as their personal and professional reputations in the community. Whether you are navigating the legal system in Greenville, Spartanburg, or surrounding Upstate communities, no one should face the stress and burdens of criminal charges alone.

Chad understands that an experienced, local criminal defense attorney is essential. From the very beginning of an investigation, he provides aggressive and zealous representation to ensure his clients' liberties are fully protected and fights for the best possible outcome in local courtrooms.

Focused Experience & Local Background

Having been raised in the Upstate of South Carolina, Chad is proud to have called Greenville home for the majority of his life and is deeply familiar with the region's legal landscape. After graduating from Greenville High School, Chad attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in political science and history. He then attended The Charleston School of Law, graduating Cum Laude with Honors.

While in law school, Chad competed in Moot Court, was a member of the Federal Courts Law Review, and served as an articles editor for MALABU, the Maritime Law Bulletin. He received CALI awards—given to the student who achieves the highest grade in their class—in Legal Writing and Research, Historic Preservation Law, and Criminal Law. He also worked with the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense in the Division of Capital Defenders, advocating for those facing the death penalty. This role sparked Chad’s desire to focus his career entirely on criminal defense.

After law school, Chad returned to the Upstate to join the 13th Circuit Public Defender’s Office as an Assistant Public Defender in Greenville. He continued his dedication to local defense when he was promoted to Deputy Public Defender of the Pickens County Public Defender’s Office. Today, his private practice brings that extensive, localized courtroom experience to clients across the Greenville-Spartanburg area.

Chad is a graduate of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (National Criminal Defense College). He is a member of the South Carolina Bar, the Greenville County Bar, the Greenville Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, and the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.

When he is not working, Chad can be found spending time with his wife and two young children, enjoying the outdoors, attempting to master the intricacies of cooking good barbeque, or passionately rooting for the Atlanta Braves.

Courts & Jurisdictions Served

Chad provides aggressive criminal defense representation across Upstate South Carolina, including:

Greenville County: Greenville County Courthouse, 13th Judicial Circuit, and municipal courts.

Spartanburg County: Spartanburg County Courthouse, 7th Judicial Circuit, and local magistrate courts.

Pickens County: Pickens County courts and surrounding Upstate jurisdictions.
