Exciting Funding Opportunity: Family League Introduces the Adaptive Village Small Grants Program RFP

Family League has unveiled the Adaptive Village Small Grants Program in response to a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) conducted in partnership with Morgan Center for Urban Health Equity at Morgan State University. This grant aims to back innovative projects that tackle crucial health issues in targeted communities.

Teaming up with Morgan State University, the Adaptive Village Small Grants Program encourages community members to propose and execute projects that address health disparities and promote well-being. This year's focus is on initiatives in Park Heights, Southeastern, Cherry Hill, Brooklyn/Curtis Bay/Hawkins, Belair-Edison, Sandtown Winchester/Harlem Park, Penn-North/Reservoir Hill, Southwest Baltimore, Madison East, Greenmount East, and Greater Govans.

Important Dates:
Pre-Proposal Conference – September 4, 2024 (via Zoom)
Application Deadline – September 20, 2024, by 4:00 pm EST
Funding decisions are expected to be announced around November 19, 2024.

Someone filed for the trademark "I'm With Her" on July 26, 2024. It's associated with classes 025, 035, 009, and 016 (apparel, advertising, electronics, and signs). This phrase is widely used to support Kamala Harris.

Is this a fair move? There are existing trademarks for "I'm With Her" by a folk-country group. Could this new application be rejected due to lack of distinctiveness or confusion? Let's discuss!

In a child custody case or a contested child support case, the judge may choose to appoint a lawyer for the child. The judge may also choose to interview the child personally. A child who is at least 16 years old may choose to ask for a custody change directly.

The judge may appoint a lawyer to serve one of three different roles.
1. A “child privilege attorney” decides whether a child’s confidential or privileged information should be released in court.
2. A “best interest attorney” advocates for the child’s best interests.
3. A “child advocate” advocates for the child’s wishes.

The Maryland Rules provide guidelines for the practice for court-appointed attorneys representing children in child custody, support, and access cases. Note that the court can order an attorney appointed as a best interest attorney or a child advocate attorney can also take on the responsibilities of a child privilege attorney. The court can also order an child privilege attorney to change their role to that or a best interest attorney or a child advocate.

Appointment may be most appropriate in cases involving the following factors, allegations, or concerns:

(1) request of one or both parties;
(2) high level of conflict;
(3) inappropriate adult influence or manipulation;
(4) past or current child abuse or neglect;
(5) past or current mental health problems of the child or party;
(6) special physical, educational, or mental health needs of the child that require investigation or advocacy;
(7) actual or threatened family violence;
(8) alcohol or other substance abuse;
(9) consideration of terminating or suspending parenting time or awarding custody or visitation to a non-parent;
(10) relocation that substantially reduces the child's time with a parent, sibling, or both; or
(11) any other factor that the court considers relevant.

Four years ago today I was being rushed into surgery after a series of events I could not control. I was hundreds of mikes from home and alone. During some very scary moments I had to fight and advocate for my medical treatment. It’s a situation I wouldn’t wish on anybody. One thing I was able to control was my planning. Having my medical advanced directive in place and with me guaranteed my mom could be there for me remotely. She argued with doctors and asked important questions that helped to protect me and get me the care I needed. Have you gone down the rabbit hole of interweb-influencers explaining everything you don’t need to know about what tools are available to you? Well let me help SIMPLIFY things in as close to 90 seconds as I can. THERE ARE ONLY 4 TYPES OF TRUSTS YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND TO BUILD & PROTECT A FOUNDATION. (And I love the catchy videos but if you’re creating things you don’t understand you’re wasting time and money. ) Keep It Short & Simple… 1. Testamentary trust. This is a trust that appears as language in a last will and testament giving directives for Trust to be created, after one passes away, in the event that certain criteria exist. I also like to refer to this as a springing trust. It springs up if it becomes necessary 2. Revocable living trust. A revocable, living trust exist while you’re still here it can be used as a vehicle, or a lockbox to protect and transfer assets before and after death. 3. Irrevocable trust. An irrevocable trust is a tool that is used for disclaiming assets. This is useful for avoiding taxes, liabilities or things like the Medicaid look back period. 4. Special needs trust. A special needs. Trust is essential for anybody with a loved one receiving government benefits for reasons of disability.
