An unexpected call that appears to come from USCIS may not actually be from USCIS.

USCIS has received reports of scammers impersonating the agency and other immigration-related organizations. These callers may ask about your immigration case, request personal or financial information, or even use technology to make their caller ID appear legitimate.

Be especially cautious if someone pressures you to act immediately or threatens negative consequences if you don’t comply.

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t provide sensitive information over the phone. Hang up and contact USCIS through official channels to verify whether the communication is legitimate.

If you believe you’ve been targeted by an immigration-related scam, report the incident through the appropriate fraud reporting channels.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is increasing scrutiny of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorizations and reminding schools that CPT must be an integral part of a student’s academic program.

Did you know that unpaid child support can affect your ability to keep or obtain a U.S. passport?

Under federal law, individuals who owe more than $2,500 in court-ordered child support may have their U.S. passport revoked. If that happens, the passport can no longer be used for international travel, and eligibility for a new passport may not be restored until the child support debt has been resolved through the appropriate state child support enforcement agency.

A new H-1B fee is being proposed.

DHS has proposed an additional $103,265 fee for H-1B cap-subject petitions, including those eligible for the master’s cap.

The proposal is now subject to a 30-day public comment period, and it remains to be seen whether it will affect the upcoming H-1B cap season.

Some USCIS field offices have begun sending courtesy emails before adjustment of status interviews with reminders about uploading updated evidence through the myUSCIS portal, bringing original documents, and other interview-related instructions.

If you receive one of these emails, review it carefully and complete any requested steps before your interview. Taking time to prepare in advance can help your interview go more smoothly and ensure you have the documents USCIS may need to review.
