Back to school or off to college? Either way, parents, this one's for you.

Everybody needs an estate plan. But if you have kids, it's not optional — it's essential.

If your children are still minors, your plan is what makes sure the people you trust are the ones who step in for them if you ever can't. If your "kid" just turned 18 and is heading off to campus, remember: at 18, your legal authority as a parent ends. Without a Health Care Directive and Power of Attorney in place, you may not have access to their medical records or a say in their care in an emergency — no matter how close your family is.

Hi, I'm talking to you — the 18, 19, 20-something-year-old who thinks estate planning is not something for her or him.

Once you turn 18, your parents may no longer have automatic access to your medical information or the authority to make decisions for you in an emergency.

It does not matter how close your family is, who pays the bills, or how involved your parents are. Without the right legal documents in place, healthcare providers may be unable to share information or take direction from the people who know and love you most.
