As an organization that protects and advances the rights of people with disabilities, Disability Rights California (DRC) is disturbed by the violence against Ryan Gainer, a 15-year-old Black autistic teenager. DRC vehemently condemns racism, ableism, and police brutality.

"DRC condemns this terrible act of violence by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s department against Ryan Gainer and his family. Disabled people and their families, in California and across the country, fear interactions with law enforcement and the violence those interactions often lead to. DRC will continue to advocate for increased access to community-based care and decrease interactions with law enforcement that will keep disabled people safe,” - DRC Director of Public Policy Eric Harris

Yesterday, the State Senate took a crucial step toward protecting California’s most vulnerable students by unanimously advancing legislation by Senator Dave Cortese to ban “prone restraints” in K-12 schools.

"Disability Rights California, disabled students, and their parents throughout the state are thrilled that SB 483 passed the Senate Floor without any opposition. Banning prone restraints in all schools will protect students from unnecessary harm. Thank you to Senator Cortese for his leadership and we look forward to the next part of the Legislative process." - Eric Harris, Director of Public Policy at Disability Rights California
