Ken Miller was a giant and elder brother in our relatively small local legal community. I first met him in 2014 during an internship while on summer break from law school. He was always kind, ethical, and more than competent. All of us will miss him.

On Saturday a friend and I had the privilege to compete in the Whiskey Hotel Team Summer Ruck Match at Briar Rabbit Shooting Sports in Zanesville, OH. We rucked approximately 7 miles throughout the day and shot several rifle stages out to 500 yards or so. Our rucks had to weigh a minimum of 25 pounds, not counting consumables such as water and ammunition. I never got spot-checked for weight, but I'd estimate that my pack weighed about 40lbs.

My round-trip was approximately 1000 miles over about 36 hours, but this match was worth it. This match, like all of Whiskey Hotel's ruck matches, was an excellent test of equipment, physical endurance, and practical shooting skills under stress.

Yesterday I noticed that Run N Gun Nation had released his photos from the The Gun Run June 2026 match at The Sawmill Training Complex. This particular photo was taken on the very last stage, which was pistol-only. As always, it was an excellent, challenging match.

I left the house a little after 4am today to make it on time to Tim Lau's "Throw Back 3-Gun (or 2-Gun . . .)" match at VIRTUE of DEFENSE TACTICAL in Old Fort, NC. I shot in the 2-gun division. The discerning viewer may notice that my sidearm is not my typical Prodigy, nor my former go-to, the Sig M17. Today I competed with my CZ75B for the first time. It's a solid weapon, but I definitely need to practice more with it. The Geissele Super Duty 16" upper on the AR continues to run like a top.

Today's primary lesson-learned-the-hard-way was "Have a contingency plan for when it rains." It rained heavily from about 9am to 12pm today, which meant that both my glasses and my rifle optic were continually drenched in water. The resultant visibility issues caused me to utterly fail Stage 2. I think some investment in water-repellent lens coatings is in my future.

Today I started at the Bradley County Justice Center for General Sessions Court, where I assisted at two arraignments and got a client's cash bond reduced by 95%. I then went to the Juvenile Justice Center where I covered the Order of Protection docket for a few hours and heard several contested hearings until almost 1pm. I immediately had to rush back over to the Bradley County Jail to visit two incarcerated clients. I then had two in-office appointments which were complicated by an electrical storm that knocked out the power for about an hour. Now I'm reading a trial transcript and working on a filing. It never stops around here!

Today I presided over the Bradley County Juvenile Court delinquency docket as my friend Magistrate Hayes was on a well-deserved vacation. As always, a big Thank You is owed to our YSOs, court security, and clerks who make the process work.

Today I had the privilege of sitting as special judge for Judge Andrew B Morgan in Bradley County Family Court. This morning was the juvenile delinquency docket; the court staff and I helped approximately thirty young people and their families in handling their legal matters. I'm very appreciative of the Youth Services Officers, deputy clerks, court security, and other staff who made sure we processed these cases in a fair and expeditious manner.
