Tucked right into the neighborhood, League Park was baseball the way it used to be, close enough that the outfield practically leaned against the houses beyond the wall. ⚾
The grandstand was small and wooden, the crowd close to the action, and that famously short right field made for a quirky corner every regular knew by heart. Fans in their caps and shirtsleeves packed the bleachers on a sunny afternoon, and kids found their way in however they could. You were never far from the field, and you could hear everything, the crack of the bat, the chatter, the vendors working the aisles.
This is a photo that catches the city on the edge of its next big change, still holding onto an intimate kind of ballpark that would soon feel like a memory. There was a warmth to those tight old parks that the bigger ones could never quite match.
Did your family ever take you to a game at League Park? 🧢
