The Chandra Law Firm LLC

The Chandra Law Firm LLC U.S. News & World Report says we’re one of the “Best Law Firms in America” for civil rights. To our karmic facilitators™, your case is our cause.®

Chandra Law is a boutique civil and criminal litigation firm that provides passionate, creative, and relentless advocacy for its clients. The firm has achieved tremendous results when everything—liberty, property, or reputation—was on the line. As a former federal prosecutor, law director for a major American city, law professor, and large-firm litigator in both Los Angeles and Cleveland, founding

and managing partner Subodh Chandra draws on experiences that few lawyers have had in combination. And Chandra’s colleagues—all veterans of large-firm practice—drive the firm’s dynamic strategies to get results. Chandra Law focuses on high-profile and civil and criminal trial and appellate litigation across America. Practice areas include civil-rights (e.g., employment discrimination and retaliation; First Amendment, voting rights, and police and other governmental misconduct), whistleblower actions including the federal False Claims Act, white-collar criminal defense (such as healthcare fraud, mortgage fraud, telecommunications fraud, and public corruption), and business disputes including contract claims and insurance-coverage matters, in both federal and state courts. We also perform internal investigations (including for Fortune 200 companies). Often, the dilemmas confronting our clients have a crisis-communications, public-policy dimension requiring attorneys who understand how to navigate a challenging media environment, protect reputations under public scrutiny, and scrutinize reputations that deserve to be challenged. Our cases are not just cases to us. They are causes.

BREAKING🚨 ICE just arrested a special needs teacher who’s lived in the USA for 26 years, has a green card, and no criminal record. Her nightmare began when she left the country to care for her critically ill parents.

Venkata Vasamsetty flew to India in July 2022 after her elderly parents became seriously ill.

Then she got sick herself.

Vasamsetty caught COVID, was hospitalized for nearly two weeks, and ended up staying in India for about seven months before finally returning home to North Carolina.

Immigration authorities claimed her long absence meant she had abandoned her permanent residency.

She fought them.

Earlier this year, an immigration judge ordered DHS to produce evidence that Vasamsetty had actually abandoned her green card.

DHS missed the deadline.

On May 19, the judge DISMISSED the deportation case. When DHS tried to submit its evidence late, the judge refused.

Less than three months later, Vasamsetty did exactly what ICE required her to do: she showed up at its Charlotte field office for a scheduled appointment.

ICE put her in handcuffs and took her away.

Vasamsetty has held a green card since 2013 and spent more than a decade substitute teaching special-needs students in Wake County. Her two children and her grandchildren are U.S. citizens.

She is also severely diabetic. Her daughter Teja says ICE took her without her insulin and that she went two days without it. DHS disputes allegations that she has received inadequate medical care.

Her attorney has called the appointment a “trap” and filed an emergency habeas petition. A federal judge has now ordered the government to explain what legal authority it has to keep her detained.

She remains locked inside a Georgia detention center.
