Author and columnist Regina Brett recently shared a powerful and heartfelt reflection on her uncontested divorce (a “dissolution”)—and I was deeply honored to be a part of her journey.

In her words:
"I’m trying to rewrite and retell the story of this ending. Trying to see it as a completion of our karmic contract. Trying to call it what it also is: a beginning.
We used a wonderful mediator who I’d recommend to the world—Jim Robenalt at Next Page Mediation. I’m stealing a page from his playbook.
I’m a writer, so I want to call this a new chapter, not a failure. I’m just starting a new chapter of my life on July 11."

Thank you, Regina. It was a privilege to help guide you both through this transition.

It just might be the most meaningful 29th wedding anniversary gift

I had a great visit to Northwestern last week to help coach a divorce mediation course at the School of Professional Studies. Helping guide students through a mediation simulation reinforces to me how much I enjoy doing what I do.

I was grateful to have received this hand-written note from a client.

Here is the text:

Jim,
I’m sure it’s a cliché you hear often – I wish I never had to work with you, but I’m glad that I did.
How you handled your work has been pivotal in turning something I never wanted or imagined, into a healthy and healing phase. You've certainly helped the well-being of myself & my daughter.
Thank you for representing yourself so genuinely – you held up on everything you promised.
I appreciate your work & will always remember the help you provided. Thank you.

I was very happy to see this weekend's NYT's article - "Can Divorce be Affordable? Yes, but Only if Spouses Want It to Be."

It succinctly makes the case for why I serve as a divorce mediator. Divorce is an emotional trauma for any couple. The last thing divorcing families need is to layer on costly litigation.

Mediation is far more affordable than a contested divorce. As one mediation participant explained: "before you go down the rabbit hole of rage and revenge, think where you want your money to go."

When making the difficult decision of how best to navigate a divorce, it is always worth considering how mediation might be used to arrive at a fair resolution.

There are ways to reduce the stress and expense of ending a marriage, but they require both parties to want to end the relationship civilly.

I enjoyed co-authoring an article on "March Madness" -- why March is the peak-month for divorce filings and how mediation can help.

For many, March is the month couples conclude their marriage. It is infamously known as "divorce month" or "March Madness" in family law.

Just wrapped up a fantastic week coaching a group of about 20 students at a divorce mediation course at the Northwestern University School of Professional Studies. The Kellogg School is beautiful and it was rejuvenating to interact with folks who believe in the future of mediation.

Divorce can be an emotional time. I sat down with a professional clinical counselor, Allison Bruce, to learn more about our physiological response to stress and trauma. A key takeaway - mediation is much a better format than litigation when dealing with heightened emotions.

Considering a divorce? Mediation can help calm your fear response so you are able to respond in a present, centered way. Divorce mediation offers an amicable and collaborative way to divorce.
