I had a wonderful week at Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies. Grateful to have been selected for another year to coach a course on divorce mediation—an area of work that continues to inspire and challenge me. It was a privilege to work with such thoughtful and dedicated professionals throughout the course.

Author and columnist Regina Brett recently shared a powerful and heartfelt reflection on her uncontested divorce (a “dissolution”)—and I was deeply honored to be a part of her journey.

In her words:
"I’m trying to rewrite and retell the story of this ending. Trying to see it as a completion of our karmic contract. Trying to call it what it also is: a beginning.
We used a wonderful mediator who I’d recommend to the world—Jim Robenalt at Next Page Mediation. I’m stealing a page from his playbook.
I’m a writer, so I want to call this a new chapter, not a failure. I’m just starting a new chapter of my life on July 11."

I had a great visit to Northwestern last week to help coach a divorce mediation course at the School of Professional Studies. Helping guide students through a mediation simulation reinforces to me how much I enjoy doing what I do.

I was very happy to see this weekend's NYT's article - "Can Divorce be Affordable? Yes, but Only if Spouses Want It to Be."

It succinctly makes the case for why I serve as a divorce mediator. Divorce is an emotional trauma for any couple. The last thing divorcing families need is to layer on costly litigation.

Mediation is far more affordable than a contested divorce. As one mediation participant explained: "before you go down the rabbit hole of rage and revenge, think where you want your money to go."

When making the difficult decision of how best to navigate a divorce, it is always worth considering how mediation might be used to arrive at a fair resolution.

There are ways to reduce the stress and expense of ending a marriage, but they require both parties to want to end the relationship civilly.
