Vacation packing usually includes the essentials like sunscreen, swimsuits, and travel documents, but one process that is crucial to execute well is making sure everything at home is in order before you leave.

Before heading out, it’s worth double-checking that you have a few key items in place:

🔹Medical documents
🔹Powers of attorney
🔹A current will

To give you that peace of mind while you’re away, I’m here to help review and make sure your documents are up to date.

A lot of people assume estate planning is something you deal with later in life, but in reality, it begins the moment you become a legal adult.

Whether you’re heading to college, starting your career, getting married, or raising children, these life stages all come with moments where someone may need to step in and support you.

Having the right documents in place is less about assets and more about making sure the right people can act on your behalf if needed.

If one of these stages sounds familiar, I’m happy to help you determine whether anything should be put in place or updated.

Graduation season comes with a lot of important conversations, but one that often gets missed is what legally changes when your child turns 18.

At that point, you may no longer be able to speak with doctors, receive medical updates, or step in during an emergency without the proper documents in place. Many families don’t realize this until they’re already in a stressful situation.

Taking a little time now to put the right documents in place can make all the difference, and if you’re unsure what this should look like for your family, I’m happy to walk you through it.

You probably already have the college checklist covered, from bedding and school supplies to move-in day plans. One important piece that often gets overlooked is preparing for the unexpected.

If your student is away from home and something happens, would you be able to step in right away? Without the proper documents, even that process can be delayed.

Having a few key items in place before they leave can make a meaningful difference:

🔹Health Care Power of Attorney
🔹HIPAA Authorization
🔹Financial Power of Attorney

It’s a simple step that helps ensure they’re really prepared for this next chapter, and if you would like guidance on getting these in place before move-in day, I’m here to help.

Congratulations!! Graduation season is upon us and we are ready to celebrate. Graduation is a huge milestone and an exciting step forward. It also marks an important legal transition that many can overlook.

Once your child turns 18, you’re no longer automatically able to step in for medical or financial decisions. Even in an emergency, providers may not be able to share information with you.

A few simple documents can make all the difference:

🔹Health Care Power of Attorney
🔹HIPAA Authorization
🔹Financial Power of Attorney
🔹A basic Will

If you're about to celebrate with your newly-minted adult, please don't let them go off on their next adventure without being properly prepared. Contact me if I can help you determine which documents make sense for your situation.

Many families function best when roles are defined rather than assumed. A well-structured plan may include:

🔹A primary health care decision-maker
🔹A backup decision-maker
🔹A financial agent
🔹Someone authorized to receive information under HIPAA

Clear roles can reduce stress, prevent burnout, and keep the focus on honoring the individual’s wishes.

Across generations — young adults, parents, and grandparents — clarity brings confidence.

Also remember, documents and decisions without discussion are useless. Please talk to your family about your wishes and directions.

If you would like help creating a structured, easy-to-understand plan for your family in Solon or anywhere in Ohio, I am here to guide you through the process in a way that is clear and manageable.

For parents of minor children, one of the most important questions is: If something happened to us, who would raise our children?

In Ohio, only a court can officially appoint a guardian. However, parents can nominate the person they believe should serve in a properly signed document, such as a will. Probate courts generally honor that nomination unless there is a serious concern.

Planning ahead allows you to:
🔹Identify someone who shares your values
🔹Provide guidance to the court
🔹Reduce uncertainty for your children

This is a deeply personal decision, and thoughtful planning can provide meaningful direction if it is ever needed.

If you have young children and would like to discuss guardianship planning in Ohio, I am happy to walk through your options.

Conversations about healthcare wishes do not have to feel overwhelming. I often recommend a simple three-step approach:

🔹Values — What matters most to you? What does quality of life mean to you?
🔹People — Who would speak for you if a physician determines you cannot make decisions?
🔹Documents — Where are the signed forms stored, and who has copies?

When families begin with values, legal tools tend to feel more like support than paperwork. The goal is clarity, so loved ones are not left guessing under pressure.

If you would like guidance on starting this conversation in a calm, practical way, I am here to help.

Even when a Power of Attorney is legally valid, real-world systems work best when the most current version is easy to access. Banks, hospitals, and financial institutions move more efficiently when:
🔹The document is clearly executed
🔹The newest version is readily available
🔹Outdated copies have been revoked and removed
🔹Agents understand their role

Keeping documents organized, both physically and digitally, can reduce delays when timing matters. A short review today can prevent avoidable friction later.

If you are unsure whether your current documents are practical for today’s systems, I am happy to help you assess and update them.

Life evolves. Your documents should evolve with it. Certain milestones are strong signals that it is time to review your planning:

🔹Turning 18
🔹Marriage or divorce
🔹Welcoming a child
🔹A move to a new state
🔹A significant job or financial change
🔹A new diagnosis or health change

This is not about expecting something to go wrong. It is about making sure your chosen decision-makers and instructions still match your current reality.

Advance directives and powers of attorney can be updated at any time while you have capacity. The most recent properly executed version generally controls. If one of these milestones sounds familiar, I am glad to help you determine whether anything should be updated.
