Got a speeding ticket?
Before you pay it online and move on, read this.

In North Carolina, paying a ticket is the same as pleading guilty. That can mean points on your license and higher insurance rates that stick around for years.

"If I die without a will, the state gets everything."

Truth: Not quite. In North Carolina, if you die without a will, state law decides who inherits, usually your spouse, children, or other close relatives, in shares set by statute. The state only steps in if no relatives can be found.

The real problem? The law's plan might not match yours. It doesn't know about your stepchildren, your best friend, or the charity you love. It also won't name a guardian you've chosen for your minor children.

A will puts you in charge. Let's make sure your wishes are the ones that count.

Business owners, the end of the year is a great time for a quick legal checkup.

Ask yourself:
• Is my operating agreement or bylaws up to date?
• Have ownership or roles changed this year?
• Do I have a plan if a partner leaves, retires, or passes away?
• Are my contracts protecting me?

Buying or selling a home? Here's what to expect at your closing.

Your closing attorney makes sure the title is clear, the money goes where it should, and the deed is properly recorded. Before closing day, you'll review your settlement statement so there are no surprises. At the table, you'll sign the deed, loan documents, and a few other forms, and then the keys are yours.

Bring a valid photo ID, and never wire money based only on an email. Always call your closing office at a number you know to confirm wiring instructions.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and we want to give a shout-out to a group that rarely gets one: caregivers.

If you're caring for an aging parent, a spouse, or a family member with special needs, you're carrying a lot. Juggling appointments, bills, and paperwork on top of everything else is exhausting.

Take a breath today. Ask for help. And know that getting the legal pieces in place, like a power of attorney or guardianship when it's needed, can take some of that weight off your shoulders.

You take care of everyone else. Don't forget to take care of you.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This month, the Triad Law Group family stands with the survivors, the fighters, the families, and the caregivers who know firsthand what a breast cancer diagnosis means. We also honor the memory of those we've lost.

Here's our gentle reminder: take care of yourself. Schedule that screening you've been putting off, talk with your doctor about your risk, and encourage the women in your life to do the same. Early detection saves lives.

And because life can change in an instant, it's also a good time to make sure your important documents are in place. A health care power of attorney and advance directive make sure the people you trust can speak for you and that your wishes are known, so your family can focus on what matters most.

Welcome to the team, Jessica McGhee! 🎉

We're excited to introduce Jessica McGhee, our newest Estate Administration and Estate Planning Paralegal!

Jessica brings an impressive educational background to Triad Law Group. An Ohio native, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, her Master's in Political Science, and her Master of Public Administration, all from Marshall University. She went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Ohio Northern University's law school, and we're excited to cheer her on as she sits for the bar exam next spring!

Today, Jessica and her partner call Winston-Salem home with their son and their two dogs, DiDi and Dawson. When she's not helping our clients plan for the future and navigate the estate process, you'll find her enjoying Mexican food and heading out on family adventures.
