I will be the presenter for the Case Law Update portion at the Child Welfare Seminar in September. This is the 4th year in a row I have been asked to do the case law update, and I am honored I keep getting asked back each year to help keep our local legal community educated on changes in the law regarding child welfare. Each year I work really hard to make my presentation entertaining and fun to listen to! 🙂

This Wednesday night I took nine packs of toilet paper with me to the Legal Aid Clinic in Cleburne. I am often the only attorney in my community that volunteers at the clinic. We had overbought on sale for our home, and I figured maybe Legal Aid had a partner organization that could use it.

What I didn’t expect?

Legal Aid said they needed it.

Their funding has been slashed and threatened so badly — especially under the Trump administration — that they can barely afford basic office supplies. Yes, even toilet paper. Legal Aid staff attorneys are juggling eviction defense, domestic violence cases, and custody battles — while wondering if they’ll have enough paper towels or printer ink to get through the week. They have enough funding through 2025, but after that who knows - and more importantly - no one seems to care if they shut down.

It’s not just the office, either.

A woman who came in late overheard me mention the toilet paper. Quietly, she asked if she could have a pack.
She couldn’t afford any.
I gave her one.
She almost cried.

That’s where we are now.

Toilet paper isn’t just a household item — it’s a lifeline.

We cut funding for the poor and reroute it to billionaires. We pass laws that make it harder for working families to survive — while pretending it’s about responsibility. We gut legal aid, knowing full well it’s often the only line of defense between a desperate parent and losing their children, their home, their safety.

If that doesn’t tell you how broken things are, maybe this will -
Even without a pandemic - toilet paper matters again. That’s how far we’ve let things go.

At Edmonds Law Firm we know that families come in all shapes, sizes, colors and all types of parents and kids. From day one, our website, social media, business cards, etc. have always said "Safe Space" - because we are just that - a safe space for you and your family to discuss your legal situation with nothing but acceptance and value for your family - just how it is, not how others think it should be. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH TEXAS! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈
