People have been coming to this corner of Tampa Bay for at least 7,000 years. The Tocobaga and their ancestors built villages, fished the seagrass beds, and constructed shell mounds that still rise from the ground at Weedon Island Preserve in northeast St. Petersburg today. The Smithsonian excavated the site in the 1940s. In 1972 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Before it was protected, the island also hosted a Hollywood movie studio, a Prohibition-era speakeasy, and a working airport.
The 3,190-acre preserve at 1800 Weedon Drive NE offers 4.7 miles of trails, a 45-foot observation tower with panoramic views of Tampa Bay, a four-mile self-guided kayak loop through mangrove tunnels, a fishing pier, and kayak rentals. The free Cultural and Natural History Center houses a 40-foot, 1,100-year-old dugout canoe found on the shoreline in 2011 alongside 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits.
