LEGAL OPINIONATOR — wanna sound smart with your friends?
"You have the right to remain silent."
You've heard it on TV a thousand times. Here's the part that matters: USE IT.
If police want to question you, you don't have to answer. Politely say: "I'm exercising my right to remain silent, and I want a lawyer." Then stop talking.
This isn't about guilt or innocence. It's about not handing the other side the rope. Even innocent people talk themselves into trouble.
Silence can't be used against you. Your words can.
Your constitutional rights are so important, I put them on the back of our business cards. Over the past 32 years, many clients have just handed the police officer our card and told them to call me — so we can talk about what they want.
