Pride month is a great time to create a plan for your family.

It’s June and that means it’s time to celebrate the LGBTQ community. It also means it’s time to think about how to protect our loved ones in those relationship relationships.

A will is one of the most important legal documents a parent or spouse can have in place. It allows you to decide who should receive your property, who should handle your estate, and who should care for your minor children if something happens to you.

Without a will, those decisions are left to North Carolina law and the court system. That can create additional stress, delays, and uncertainty for the people you love during an already difficult time.

A will also gives your family guidance and structure. It creates clarity around your wishes and helps ensure the right people are empowered to step in when needed.

If you live in North Carolina and have been putting off estate planning, I would love to help. Schedule a free consultation with me and let’s talk about creating a plan that protects your family and gives you peace of mind.

“Do I need a will or a trust?” If you’re asking this question, you are not alone. It is the most common question I get in my estate planning practice.

**What Moving Reminded Me About Estate Planning**

This weekend, my family is moving.

And if you have moved recently, you already know what that means.

Boxes everywhere.
Things you forgot you owned.
A little excitement.
A little exhaustion.
And a lot of reflection about the life you’ve built.

As I packed up our home this week, I found myself thinking about something I talk about with families every day:

Estate planning is not really about “stuff.”

Not at its core.

It is about the life we build for the people we love.

Because when you move, you realize pretty quickly that a home is more than walls and furniture. It is routines. Memories. Bedtime stories. Favorite coffee mugs. Growth charts on the wall. The feeling your children have when they know they are safe and cared for.

And honestly, estate planning works the same way.

Most people think estate planning is only about who gets your house or your bank account someday. But for families with children, it is often much more personal than that.

It is about protecting stability.

It is about making sure someone can step in and care for your children if needed.
It is about making sure your spouse can continue paying bills and accessing accounts without unnecessary obstacles.
It is about reducing stress during a time when your family would already be overwhelmed.

It is about preserving the life you worked so hard to create.

That is why documents like:

* Wills
* Powers of Attorney
* Healthcare documents
* Trusts

matter so much.

They are not just legal paperwork.

They are instructions. Protection. Guidance. A framework that helps your family continue moving forward, even during difficult moments.

And just like moving, estate planning rarely feels convenient.

Most of us wait until life slows down.
Until work calms down.
Until the kids are older.
Until things feel less busy.

But life is usually busy because we are building something meaningful.

That is exactly why planning matters.

This move reminded me that the goal is not perfection. The goal is creating security and stability for the people we love while we build a life together.

That is what estate planning is really about.

Earlier today, I spent time at the ProfitSolv office, and later stopped by the North Carolina Bar Association.

In both places, I ran into people I’ve known for years. Colleagues, collaborators, friends. We shared quick updates and easy conversations that picked up right where we left off.

It reminded me that community isn’t separate from what we do. It becomes part of who we are.

As an estate planning attorney, so much of my work is rooted in relationships. Not just documents, but people. Families. The connections that shape our lives and the legacies we leave behind.

Days like today bring that full circle. The relationships we build professionally are not all that different from the ones we work to protect for our clients.

And that’s what makes this work feel meaningful.

If you’re in North Carolina and have been meaning to revisit your estate plan, or create one for the first time, I’d be glad to help.

Most couples assume everything will “just work” if one spouse is gone, but that’s not always how it plays out. A few simple decisions now can make sure a surviving parent has immediate access, clear authority, and stability for their children. If you’ve been putting this off, this is a good place to start.
